Water Polo Climbs to No. 2 in National Poll

BRIDGEPORT, Pa.  – The Cal Lutheran men’s water polo team is one point away from the top spot in the nation, jumping to the No. 2 position in the Week 5 Division III Top 10 Poll as voted on by the Collegiate Water Polo Association.

Cal Lutheran earned a 5-0 victory, by forfeit, over Division I St. Francis after the Terriers played with an illegible player last week in a double overtime battle.

The Kingsmen improved to 5-6 entering league play Oct. 3.

Of the six losses this fall, all have been to scholarship Division I schools. CLU defeated Division I Fordham at the Princeton Invitational to open the season.

Thus far in 2012, the Kingsmen have faced three different SCIAC schools, earning one-goal victories in each, including a double overtime thriller against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to conclude the UC Davis Aggie Shootout in late September.

Pomona-Pitzer clung to the No. 1 spot with 95 points. CLU is second with 94 and Johns Hopkins is currently third with 93. They are the only three schools with 90+ points in the poll.

The weekly poll is voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and released on Wednesday during each week of the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.
