Sheffer Sets School Record at Finis Invitational

SOUTH GATE, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran men’s swimming and diving team turned in a weekend full of solid early season performances at the 2012 Finis Invitational and junior Conrad Sheffer set a new CLU record in the 100 breaststroke in the process.

Though Sheffer was out touched to place second in the 100 breast, he etched his name atop the Cal Lutheran record books with his swim of 58.81.

Sheffer produced two first place finishes, winning the 400 Individual Medley (IM), swimming a 4:18.80 and the 200 IM in a time of 1:57.28. He also placed second in the 200 breast with a time of 2:08.79, shaving more than 10 seconds off his preliminaries time. Additionally, he was part of five relays.

The Kingsmen had a number of solid relay swims. CLU placed second in the 200 Medley Relay as Aaron Waters, Sheffer, Tyler Berg and Derrick Graham combined to swim a 1:41.31. The same group swam to a third place 400 Medley Relay finish in a time of 3:43.73, though Berg and Graham swapped positions.

Three of the four again joined forces to swim the 800 Free Relay with Sheffer leading off before Alex Franklin dove in, followed by Berg and Graham to finish third in 7:35.24. In the 400 Free Relay, Berg started things off followed by Franklin, Chase Miller and Sheffer to go a joint 3:20.98. The 200 Free Relay was a combined effort by Berg, Franklin, Millerand Sheffer. The quartet touched the wall in 1:29.95 to finish fourth.

Berg swam a 22.83 50 free to finish sixth while Franklin and Miller placed eighth and ninth, respectively, in 23.49 and 23.65. In the finals of the 100 free Berg posted a time of 49.79 for fourth while Franklin (50.70) and Miller (50.80) also swam the event.   

The 100 backstroke saw Waters finish fourth in 59.65 and he went on to place fourth in the 200 back in 2:07.41. Franklin also competed in the 100 back final, placing eighth in 1:05.14.

Graham placed fifth in the 200 fly (2:15.74) and ninth in the 100 fly (57.70), also swimming distance events. He went a 5:09.89 in the 500 free and swam the mile in 18:20.13 for sixth.

Mason Hill swam a 58.75 100 fly for tenth. Jake Hutton was sixth in the 200 fly, going a 2:18.80. Mike Potter was eighth in the 500 free with a time of 5:17.50.

Anthony Nguyen (4:34.00), Zach Kaija (4:45.07) and Waters (4:51.90) all finished top-10 in the 400 IM with Nguyen second on the team to Sheffer, placing fourth. They all swam the 200 IM as well, with Nguyen (2:07.70) and Waters (2:07.75) separated by just five hundredths of a second. Nguyen also placed sixth in the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.58 and seventh in the 200 breast in 2:23.79. Kaija hit the wall in 2:28.05 and Luis Burgos swam it in a 2:34.82.

On the boards, Ryan Brem (197.80)and Joey Zielsdorf (180.05) went 2-3 on the one-meter and CLU produced a 4-5-6 finish on the three-meter with Brem (199.30), Zielsdorf (181.35) and Kevin Schultz (164.45) all competing. Schultz was sixth on the one-meter with a 157.05.

Cal Lutheran will open Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition Saturday, Dec. 8 when the teams travel to La Verne to take the blocks against the Leopards beginning at 10:30 a.m.
