THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Facing off with the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) unbeaten  Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags, the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen suffered a 67-42 loss in a lopsided battle with the league foe.

On the first possession of the game Cal Lutheran was called for a foul and when the Stags took a 2-0 lead they would never look back, opening a double figure, 11 point, lead at the 7:51 mark. CMS then pushed that lead to as much as 21 with 2:40 to go in the opening frame.

At the intermission, the Kingsmen trailed 37-19 after shooting at a dismal 28.6 percent from the field. The Stags were on target 54.2 percent of the time and hit 5-for-9 from three-point range while CLU players combined to go just 1-for-13 from behind the arc. Both teams, however, scored 14 points in the paint in the first 20 minutes of action

In the second stanza, Cal Lutheran poured in the first five points behind a three pointer from Corey Quintana and a layup by Martin Flowers, but ultimately it was more of the same as CMS controlled the momentum for the final 18:44.

Cal Lutheran shot just 31.4 percent from the floor and was 2-for-21 from the three-point line. The free-throw shooting struggles continued for the Kingsmen with an 8-for-17 showing.

Tonight the lackluster scoring was spread out among 10 players, though no one reached double-figures. Flowers led the offense with eight and both Jayvaughn Nettles and Steven Davis tallied five. Nettles and Sulker-Hall each had two assists.

Cal Lutheran did force the Stags into 12 turnovers while taking care of the ball, losing possession just nine times. Flowers came away with a pair of steals, the most of any player on the court tonight.

CMS out rebounded CLU 39-28, though the Violet and Gold pulled down one more, seven, offensive board than the Stags. Jeremy Sulker-Hall led all players with seven rebounds, four at the offensive end of the floor. Guy Lynott came off the bench to grab six boards and score seven points in 22 minutes. Nettleswas next in line with five rebounds.

The Stags shot at a 48.8 percent overall clip with a 50 percent night from behind the arc (8-for-16) and were 70.8 percent at the line. Three players, Kevin Sullivan, Cameron Cain and Remy Pinson, shared the lead with 11 points apiece. Pinson added three assists. Shelby Lane led CMS with six rebounds while Sullivan and Cody Mivshek each came down with five.

CLU held Mivshek, the Stags leading scorer (11.9 ppg), to just six points.

Thirteen different Kingsmen stepped on the court tonight.
