CLU falls to Whittier in SCIAC meet

WHITTIER, Calif. – In Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action this morning, the Cal Lutheran women’s swimming and diving team locked up seven event victories, but the Regals fell short of the Poets, falling by a 162-133 margin on the road.

Highlighting the day were a trio of victories from Mimi Harbach in the 200 free (1:59.21), 500 free (5:19.64) in which she won by more than six seconds and the 200 Individual Medley (IM) in 2:15.63, winning by over five seconds. She opened the day by anchoring the 400 Medley Relay team that won in 4:13.01 as she teamed up with Shelby Brooks, Kelli Miller and Katie Kochalko for the victory.

Miller (2:34.41) and Kochalko (2:38.68) were the top two finishers in the 200 breaststroke. Kochalko went on to win the 100 butterfly (1:01.25) by 59 hundredths of a second and was second in the 200 fly in 2:14.47 while Miller (2:21.24) was second to Harbach in the 200 IM. Teammate Taylor Faust was third in the 200 fly with a time of 2:26.08, edging the fourth place finisher by 51 hundredths of a second.

In the 100 breaststroke Miller and Alvina Wong were the 2-3 finishers in 1:10.64 and 1:15.48, respectively. Brooks finished second in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.65 and the 200 back in 2:20.01. Karissa Winkler was second in the 1000 free in a time of 11:39.13 and Juliana Rios placed third in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 1:04.43.

The 400 Free Relay team of Faust, Brooke Hubbard, Winkler and Rios were just over two seconds off the winning time, combining to swim a 3:53.25.

Sheyenne Machida and Danielle Warmuth took the top two spots on the one-meter diving board today. Machida scored a 175.10 with Warmuth posting a 161.45. On the three-meter board Machida nearly repeated as champion but was edged by .8, taking second with a 167.75 to WC freshman Marisa Refe (168.55). Warmuth was third with a 150.65.

Cal Lutheran (1-5 SCIAC) will be back at the Samuelson Aquatics Center on Saturday, Jan. 26 when the Regals host Occidental at 10:30 a.m.
