DAVIS, Calif. Three more seconds and the Cal Lutheran and Division II Sonoma State water polo teams would have gone into overtime, but it was the Seawolves who had the advantage as the Regals fell, 9-8, in their final game of the UC Davis Challenge this afternoon. CLU opened the day with an 11-6 loss to Division I No. 18 University of the Pacific.

Against Sonoma Cal Lutheran got goals from six different players with Jordan Card and Kaylee Kastrup scoring a pair apiece. Card would also draw three ejections for the Regals who as a unit converted 6-for-9 of their 6-on-5 opportunities in the game. Kehau Ai handed out six assists while scoring a goal.

CLU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals from Adrienne Ingalla and Card in the first period. It was the Seawolves who owned the second stanza, though, outscoring CLU 5-2 to take a slim 5-4 lead at the intermission. In the second Ai and Jane Galluzzi each found the back of the net for the Violet and Gold.

After halftime the Regals again held Sonoma off the board while scoring three times, via Morgan McCardell and Kastrup, who netted two. Unfortunately, it was Sonoma who stole the final frame with four goals to one from CLU that came from Card.

Guarding the goal for the entire game, Kylee Tomasetti turned away eight Seawolves shots. Defensively, Ai came away with a trio of steals and Ingalla led the Regals with four.

Earlier in the day CLU used a late push against Pacific, outscoring the Tigers 4-3 in the fourth quarter, but the early deficit was too deep to recover from. Pacific got out to a 4-0 lead off the bat and added to the advantage while Cal Lutheran scored a pair, on goals from Ai and Ingalla, in the second stanza in an attempt to stage a comeback.

After the break, CLU held Pacific to a single goal, but was unable to take advantage of the defensive output at the offensive end of the pool, going scoreless in the third. Skylar Vasquez would score twice in the fourth quarter while Julia Samarin scored the first goal of her collegiate career and Card added to the total.

Overall, Card drew three ejections for the Regals and Kastrup chipped in with a pair of steals in game one.

Tomasetti recorded eight saves in three quarters of action before giving way to Gina Merry in the final quarter. The freshman goalie turned away two Tigers shots.

Cal Lutheran (0-5) will be off for the next 11 days as they prepare to host the Sixth Annual, 14 team, Posada Royale Women’s Water Polo Tournament between March 1-3 at the Samuelson Aquatics Center and Oaks Christian High School. CLU will face off with Division I Villanova (Pa.) on Friday, March 1 at 8:20 a.m. before meeting league foe Pomona-Pitzer at 1:00 p.m. Both games will be played at the SAC.
