Regals Send Pair to Podium

LA MIRADA, Calif. – On day one of the 2013 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Redlands at Splash! La Mirada Cal Lutheran sent two athletes to the podium.

Sheyenne Machida earned the first points of the day for the Regals by placing third on the three-meter diving board beneath sunny blue skies on a warm February day. She held on to her seed spot from a week ago, finishing with a 332.15 on her 11-dive list behind Carmen Lundell (381.20) from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and 2013 SCIAC champion Jessica Robson (388.85) from Occidental.

In the first individual swimming final of the evening Mimi Harbach placed third in the 500 free, dropping her preliminary time of 5:10.98 by exactly four seconds to finish in 5:06.98 behind a pair of Athenas from CMS, Louisa Dunwiddie (5:04.61) and LillyBelle Deer (5:05.21). Harbach has been a finalist in the event each of her two seasons swimming for the Regals.

Katie Kochalko earned her first SCIAC final appearance in the 200 Individual Medley (IM) after swimming a preliminary time of 2:12.46 to be seeded eighth entering the final. Kochalko swam slightly slower, 2:12.58, but finished seventh.

In the morning session Juliana Rios swam a time of 5:20.56 in the 500 free to be named the second alternate. Taylor Faust was right by her side, finishing in 5:20.81 to place 19th.

Kelli Miller and Alvina Wong were separated by 64 tenths of a second to finish 25th and 26th in the 200 IM with times of 2:19.31 and 2:13.95, respectively. `

The 50 free saw Wong, Sarah Forsythe and Faust go 27-28-29.

CLU opened the meet up with Rios, Wong, Faust and Forsythe swimming the 200 Free Relay in 1:41.96 to place seventh.

Closing out the event for day one, the 400 Medley Relay team of Shelby Brooks, Miller, Kochalko and Rios combined to swim a 4:02 even, placing fifth for the Regals.

After day one, Cal Lutheran sits in sixth with 117 points behind CMS (279), PP (196), OXY (164), UR (143) and CU (141). Rounding out the field are WC (99), CIT (47) and ULV (35).

Competition will continue Monday, Feb. 18 with preliminaries taking place at 9:00 a.m. followed by championship finals at 4:00 p.m. at Splash! La Mirada.
