CLU Records Fall on Day Two

LA MIRADA, Calif. – TheCal Lutheran men’s swimming and diving team continued to set new school records on day two of the 2013 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Redlands at Splash! La Mirada.

For the second day in a row Ryan Brem put the first points on the board for the Kingsmen after placing third in the three-meter diving competition. The 11-dive list that Brem completed earned him a 371.75 behind 2013 SCIAC champion James Stevick from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps who scored a 467.20 to sweep top honors on the weekend and Jacob Tittl from La Verne who was second with a 387.30.

Cal Lutheran opened the finals tonight with the first of a number of school records. Aaron Waters, Conrad Sheffer, Kyle Eckhart and Tyler Berg joined forces to swim a 1:36.35 in the 200 Medley Relay.

During the 400 Medley Relay last night Watersswam his leg, the 100 backstroke, in a school record time of 53.99. Today in the final of the 100 back he was a hundredth of a second off that pace, swimming a 54 flat to cling to his seventh spot. He earned his way into the championship finals with a finish of 54.06 this morning.

Also earning a seventh place finish tonight was Conrad Sheffer who swam identical times of 58.39 in the preliminary and final races of the 100 breaststroke to set a new Cal Lutheran record, breaking his own previous best.

A pair of Kingsmen earned spots in the consolation 100 butterfly final tonight with Eckhart and Jake Hutton going a 52.29 and 54.00, respectively, to place ninth and 13th. Eckhart entered the final in 10th after swimming a 52.17 this morning while Hutton hung on to his 13th spot, going a 53.64 in his preliminary race.

Another duo to don the Violet and Gold in a consolation heat was Anthony Nguyen and Zach Kaija. Both Kingsmen moved up in the finals as the teammates swam just two hundredths of a second apart with Nguyen (1:00.22) edging Kaija (1:00.24). Nguyen entered the finals in 12th and moved up to 11th while Kaija jumped two spots to finish 12th.

Chase Miller also swam tonight in a consolation heat, representing Cal Lutheran in the 200 freestyle. In the prelims he touched the wall in 1:46.61 and lowered that performance to 1:46.36 tonight, holding the 14th spot with both times.

A solid swim by the 800 Free Relay team of Nguyen, Derek Graham, Kaija and David Sparks was disqualified after combining to go a 7:13.78.

Following day two of competition, Cal Lutheran is currently fifth with a team score of 224. Leading in the standings is CMS (801) followed by UR (491), PP (291) and OXY (260). Rounding out the scores are WC (211), ULV (162), CIT (137) and CU (109).

The 2013 SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships will conclude on Tuesday, Feb. 18 with preliminaries taking place at 9:00 a.m. followed by championship finals at 4:00 p.m. at Splash! La Mirada. Team award presentations will take place immediately following the event.
