  • HSI Initiatives, the Center for Innovative Learning and the Department of Counselor Education are proud to welcome Dr. Gina A. Garcia to campus on Thurs., Sept. 26, to discuss our HSI identity, practices to better serve our students, and the complexities of HSI identities. Dr. Garcia is an associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh, and she recently published her book, Becoming Hispanic-Serving Institutions: Opportunities for Colleges and Universities. Faculty are invited to the following presentations being given by Dr. Garcia:

  • 2019-20 Town Halls: The Staff Development Committee invites all faculty to attend the upcoming 2019-20 Town Halls.The first Town Hall - Vitals Check and Key Findings and Action Stepswill take place on Mon., Sept. 23, 10-11:15am in Lundring Events Center.If you are unable to attend the meeting a webcast link to the Town Hall will be available.   • Fall Cultural Dance Festival: Dance and Drumming of Ghana, Tues., Sept. 24, 2-3:45pm, Dance Studio (GSFC 209). Free. Come dressed to move.
     
  • President's Update (formerly State of the University), Wed., Sept. 25, 8-9:30am, Preus-Brandt Forum.
     
  • Staff and Faculty Lunch, Wed., Sept. 25, 11am - 1pm, reserved area in the UPSTAIRS Ullman Dining Commons. The discounted price of $8 + tax includes all menu options offered in the Dining Commons.
     
  • Academic Difficulty Notices (ADNs) for Traditional Undergraduates:The official reporting period for ADNs begins Wed., Sept. 25. Please submit unsatisfactory grades for your students who are earning a C- or below through WebAdvisor by Fri., Oct. 11. This will provide an early start in identifying the students who might be struggling. Only one midterm grade submission per student in a particular class is requested for the semester. Academic Services will reach out to these students and offer support until the last day to withdraw with a "W" (Nov. 8).   • Center for Teaching and Learning's Lunch Series, Thurs., Sept. 26, 12:15-1:00pm, Swenson 103.  Kaitlin Hodgdon (CTL) will speak on "Valuable Classroom Videos with Vidgrid." Lunch is provided.   • All faculty are invited to attend an Equity & Inclusion-Mental Health and Accessibility session led by Beth Turner (CAPS) and Wendy Jimenez (DSS) on Thurs, Sept. 26, 12:25-1:15pm in Library 130 (lab).

  • Cal Lutheran is sponsoring the second annual Conejo Valley Pride Festival to be held Sat., Sept. 28, 10am-5pm at the Civic Arts Plaza Park. The university has a booth at the festival, and we’re looking for faculty and staff to volunteer at the event. For more information, contact Ryan Medders at rmedders@callutheran.edu.
     
  • Faculty Recital featuring Eric Kinsley, keyboards, Keum Hwa Cha, violin, and guest artist Haekyung An, soprano, Sat., Sept. 28, 7:30pm, Samuelson Chapel. Donations accepted.
     
  • The university will hold fire drills on Wednesday and Thursday, October 2nd and 3rd.  It is important for all classes to participate in the fire drills. Please avoid scheduling any exams during those days as your class may be interrupted.
     
  • Are you interested in serving on a faculty search committee as an equity advocate? Training for new equity advocates will take place on Wed., Oct. 23, 3:30-4:30pm and Wed., Dec. 4, 3:30-4:30pm. (Note: the first date has changed from what was announced at the September faculty meeting.) Click here to sign up.
     
  • For faculty that advise in the Traditional Undergraduate Program, Academic Services has created a Core-21 list specifically for the courses offered in the Spring 2020 semester. Click here to view it on the Academic Planning website.
     
  • NCFDD Faculty Success Program. We have funding available to support a few faculty members who would like to participate in the Spring NCFDD Faculty Success Program (“Bootcamp”). Click here for more information on the program. If interested, please contact Grady Hanrahan ghanraha@callutheran.edu and include a brief statement of why you would like to participate and how this will benefit you professionally by Sept. 30.
     
  • Nominations and expressions of interest are invited for the position of Director of the Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship (OURCS). This position carries a three-year term and will commence in Spring 2020. Please click here for more information about the OURCS. Specific details about the position can be provided upon request.   • Highlight your great work to the Cal Lutheran Community! Faculty are encouraged to submit information about their awards, appointments, publications, presentations, exhibitions, etc., for inclusion in the "Applause" section of The Weekly, the email newsletter for Cal Lutheran faculty and staff. Email information to Sharon Nelson at smnelso@callutheran.edu with a copy to Kevin Matthews at kevinm@callutheran.edu. Deadline is 5pm the Friday before publication.
     
  • Don’t Cancel That Class – The Division of Student Affairs is pleased to offer Don’t Cancel That Class to faculty members who may be away for conference travel, meetings, etc.  You may request a Student Affairs staff member to present on a particular topic (e.g., job interview skills, dealing with test anxiety, study skills, etc.) or welcome them to present on the topic of their choice.  To make arrangements for an upcoming class, please contact Director of Housing Operations, Caitlin Hodges at hodges@callutheran.edu.

This session is designed to provide the basics for new faculty, but all faculty are welcome to attend.

  • Founders Day ConvocationFri., Oct. 11, 10:30-11:30am, Samuelson Chapel. Faculty will wear their regalia and meet at the Luther Statue at 10:15am in order to process. If you rented regalia from the bookstore for Opening Convocation, you can check out this regalia again at no additional cost. If you are teaching during this time, you are welcome to bring your class. The program includes installation of the Board of Regents, guest speaker Rev. Peg Schultz-Akerson '74 and presentation of the Christus Award to Linda Baumhefner and Rod Gilbert H’16. Please RSVP toacaffairs@callutheran.edu so that we can reserve enough pews for faculty in the Chapel.

  • Call for Travel Seminar Proposals: If you are a faculty member interested in leading a Cal Lutheran Travel Seminar in the Fall 2020 – Spring 2021 academic year, please contact the Center for Global Engagement to make an appointment with the Associate Provost, Dr. Christina Sanchez, or Interim Director of the Office of Education Abroad, Mr. Brett Chin. Send your request to global@callutheran.edu and the Assistant for Global Engagement, Nighat Shah, will identify an available meeting. All meetings should be completed by Fri., Oct. 11, 2019. Please bring a draft of your course syllabus and initial travel plans (e.g., country, itinerary, etc.). We can also brainstorm options, if helpful. General information about the Undergraduate Faculty-led program process is available online. The deadline for submitting your proposal on Course Leaf is Fri., Nov. 1, 2019.   • Interfaith Lunch for Faculty and Staff, Wed., Oct. 16, 12-1pm, Kingsmen Room - Please join in for time for faculty and staff to come together over lunch to learn about each other and mutually create a community of inclusion and welcome. This year, the topics of the lunches will center around chapters selected from Barbara Brown Taylor’s Holy Envy.
