Spotlight

Indoor Classes Resuming: If the numbers in Ventura County continue to improve, we expect to be in the red tier on Wednesday. This will result in a return to indoor classes for traditional undergraduate and graduate School of Management classes that are scheduled to be taught indoors. We plan to return to indoor classes on Monday, March 29.

Training Sessions for Faculty:
The Digital Learning Department will offer 9 additional on-campus training sessions to familiarize faculty with the On-Ground Classroom Technology (360' Cameras and Kaptivo) in a HyFlex/Split teaching mode, Wed., Mar. 17 - Sat., Mar. 27. All faculty who have not had this training and will be teaching on-campus starting March 29 must RSVP and attend. Adequate steps will be taken to ensure all COVID-19 precautions are followed for these on-campus trainings. Click here for more information and to RSVP.

Announcements

  • CLU Masks: If you didn't pick up a CLU mask in the fall, stop by the Office of the Provost (downstairs in the Pederson Administration Building) to get one. (Don't forget to do your Daily Health Check first, so you can swipe into the building.)

  • Faculty Q&A with Provost Neilson on Mar. 12: Click here to view the minutes.

  • To the Faculty Advising Traditional Undergraduate Students:  Fall 21 registration begins on Mar. 15. Registration times are based on the class level students will have in Fall 21 and students have already been emailed their registration times. The Fall 21 schedule is available in both Self-Service/Student Planning and Web Advisor. Below are the approximate dates students will be registering based on their Fall 21 class level:
    • Seniors - Mar. 15-16.
    • Juniors - Mar. 16-17.
    • Sophomores: Mar. 17-18.
    • Freshmen - Mar. 18.

  • Use of Incomplete (IN) grades: A grade of Incomplete (IN) is supposed to be given only when a final piece of work in the class has not been completed. We are extending the policy in Spring 2021 to include more than just the final exam or final assignment. If a student’s ability to participate in class was impacted by the situation related to COVID-19, a grade of IN can be assigned. An incomplete cannot be completed by requiring the student to repeat the entire course. Faculty will be required to complete an incomplete contract and continue to work with the student while they are finishing the requirements of the class. The incomplete contract can be found on the Registrar page under the “For Faculty and Staff” link here.

  • The 2021 NetVUE (Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education) Conference will be held virtually Mar. 18-20. All sessions are free. Click here for more information and to register.

  • The OURCS is looking for Faculty to review Summer Research proposals. Please complete this short form if you are willing to review student proposals.

  • Funded Summer Research: All students performing paid summer research, virtually or in-person, are expected to attend the OURCS community gatherings for professional development. These events will be socially distanced and in an outside tent. Information/workshop material will be provided for students with medical concerns who cannot attend these gatherings in person. Those students performing laboratory or studio-based work are expected to be present in the labs/studios unless the research can be performed virtually. Exceptions to in-person research will also be made for those in other areas, including the humanities, business, and the social and behavioral sciences.

  • Save the Date: The Office of Sponsored Research and Projects is presenting a grant writing series for faculty and staff. The next workshop is titled Do the Dollars Make Sense? Allowable Spending & Budget Development. This workshop will be held virtually on Tues., Apr. 23, from 11:15 am to 12:30 pm. (Note new date.) Click here to register. • Education Abroad Expanded Portfolio: The CGE is delighted to announce that the Office of Education Abroad (OEA) created a new Cal Lutheran portfolio for away programs. Under the new model that is in effect as of Fall 2021, OEA increased offerings from 10 to 33 semester-long study abroad programs that expand the country/continent options beyond our previous Western European emphasis. Students participating in our programs are able to retain their financial aid, providing more equitable access to education abroad for all students. Beyond the financial aid package, OEA will provide additional scholarship funds to assist students seeking to study away. An overview information session is coming soon. Students can apply for Fall 2021 opportunities until April 1. Contact studyabroad@callutheran.edu with any questions.

  • CLU-Oxford Program: Reconfigured Model, Fall 2021 Update: The Cal Lutheran-Oxford Program is moving forward for Fall 2021! The reconfigured program maintains the foundational tutorial model classes with faculty from the prestigious Oxford University (Aug-Sept), while adding a new dimension of traditional classes and/or an internship experience in the global city of London (Sept-Nov). Please encourage your high-performing students to attend our upcoming Student CLU-Oxford Information Session on Thurs., Mar. 18, at 3pm via Zoom (ID 976 0914 9902). Carlson and Brint, program founder, have been working with the CGE to create a sustainable program that offers an opportunity for interested faculty to lead the program on an annual basis. A new director will be selected for Fall 2023. If curious about the new model and future opportunity to serve as a faculty director, please attend the upcoming CLU-Oxford Faculty Lead Interest Session on Mon., Mar. 22, at 3:30pm via Zoom (ID 959 1920 3517). Contact global@callutheran.edu to RSVP.

  • Intercultural Learning Opportunity for Students: CGE Global Pen Pal Program:
The CGE is offering a new “Global Pen Pal” program to connect US and international students. A recording of the general information session is on the International Education Week website (scroll to the bottom). CGE will match interested parties and if there are enough students host a “speed friending” event with participants. Preference is for registration by Fri., Mar. 19. The organized program is through the remainder of the spring semester, although pen pals can continue independently for a lifetime! Please contact Lara Raynaud at global@callutheran.edu if interested in providing extra credits to your students to participate.

  • Have you published a book or illustrated a work during the past year that will be published by April 20, 2021? We would like to honor you at our annual Provost's Faculty Grant Recipient and Author Recognition Reception, which takes place during the Festival of Scholars. Please email Roni Hooper at rhooper@callutheran.edu with a brief synopsis of your published book or illustrated work, along with the date of publication.
