Description

Magical Britain exlpores the rich cultures of England, Scotland, and Wales from the age of Stonehenge to the age of chivalry.  We will travel across the island of Britain with the legends of King Arthur and the Round Table, visitng Medieval castles and cathedrals, ancient monuments and modern museums.  We will learn about the Celts and their mythology, the Roman occupation of Britain, the invastions of the Saxons and Normans, and how they all changed British culture and shaped what we know of King Arthur, his knights, and the Arthurian world.

Objectives:
Throughout the semester and during travel England, Scotland, and Wales, students well learn:

  • The legends of King Arthur in Medieval and popular literature and culture
  • The history and culture of Britain under the Celts, Romans, Saxons, and Normans
  • How these different eras of British history provide key contexts for the evolution of the Arthurian legends

This course will satisfy the Core 21 upper division literature requirement and is 4 units total - 3 units assigned to spring 2018 semester and 1 unit assinged to the fall 2018 semester.  The course will be taught during the spring 2018 semester with classes continuing abroad during the first three weeks after the semester ends.

Graduating seniors are welcome to participate and will have all four units of the course assigned to the spring 2018 semester.

Pre-requisite: English 111
