Big Mountain Boogie
(May be read in any stanzaic order)
The mountain was loud.
Its dark green concealed God knows what—
Birds, primates, cats, insects, reptiles
All making a ruckus.
Somewhere under all those trees
Tom was lying face-down in the shade
Waiting for someone to rescue him,
Or maybe he wasn’t waiting anymore.
We saw bones up there before
But never thought about it
Until we ran out of water.
The Big Mountain Boogie was
Intriguing at first—we were drawn to it and
The loud celebrations that went on each night
Under its tall trees,
But once we started up its lazy slope
It only got louder.
Bright eyes followed us,
Tree branches slithered above and around leaves,
Devils swung above our heads,
Bugs crawled past our feet.
