CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran women’s tennis season came to a close at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic (SCIAC) Championships hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps this weekend.

The Regals opened the weekend as the sixth seed, which is also where they ultimately finished the season. CLU matched up against La Verne on Friday morning, falling 5-1. In the afternoon, the Violet and Gold bounced back for a 5-4 win over Whittier. Today in the final competition of the spring, Cal Lutheran dropped a 6-3 decision to Chapman.

To start the tournament, CLU got its lone point from Sarah Baker and Rebecca Gold who defeated Lauren Torres and Shanelle Trujilo 8-2 in doubles play on the third court. Once the decision was made the remaining games were unfinished, though Baker was also up a set at No. 4 for the Regals.

In the afternoon, Cal Lutheran came back to play Whittier. This time the team opened a 2-1 lead after doubles and worked to a trio more singles victories. Baker and Gold were again winners at No. 3 while teammates Annette Sousa and Emily Werman teamed up next door on court No. 2 where both pairs won by 8-2 margins. Shelby Kubota cruised at No. 5, defeating Ruthie Kaplan 6-0, 6-0. Sousa was the next sequence to finish, turning in a solid 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6. At No. 2, Gold clinched the match for the Regals with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Benay Weintraub.

Saturday morning CLU traveled back to CMS to face off with Chapman in a fifth place match that they nearly won. A trio of singles went to third set tiebreakers, though only one fell in favor of the Regals. For the third time in two days, however, Baker and Gold teamed up for a win, equaling their score of 8-2 from Round one. After Sousa took down Sara McDonald 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 Gold locked up the final CLU point of the tournament with a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) victory to cap off her sophomore season.

Cal Lutheran (10-10, 4-7 SCIAC) wrapped up its season with a .500 showing overall. CLU bids farewell to just one player and will return a solid core of student-athletes next spring.
