Alternative Spring Break:
Dominican Republic '05
A team of 13 people from CLU traveled to the Dominican Republic to work with an organization called Orphanage Outreach. CLU's team joined approximately 6 other teams from universities totalling about 38 volunteers from across the United States for the week. While there, students spent time with the residents of the host orphanage, or "hogar". The vivacious residents loved playing basketball, volleyball, and baseball, as well as enjoying taking various digital snapshots with volunteer's cameras. During the day, volunteers planned and implemented an English camp for the residents of the hogar and the local children (who were all free from school for Holy Week). Ranging from young beginners to experienced teenagers, the students culminated the week with a skit or a song from their group level that they performed for everyone. Down time was spent walking throught the charming streets of Monte Cristi and visiting with the hospitable neighbors. The week was a very warm, very beautiful one to be remembered for long after volunteers returned home!
