Alternative Spring Break - Mexico City (Mar 7, 2009)
EVENT HAS CLOSED
An Immersion Program follows what is referred to as a “reverse mission” process rather than the work projects that often come to mind when people think of a church-related trip abroad. Instead of coming with all the tools, resources and solutions to overcome poverty and injustice our participants are invited to enter into a partnership of mutuality that calls us to hear, learn and grow through dialog and relationship with those on the margins of life. We go out into the city streets, local “barrios”, and rural villages to hear the stories of families and organizations struggling against the very real systems of poverty and injustice that impact their daily lives.
This year, we are spending a week in Mexico City. The cost is $721 for the week-- lodging, in-country transportation and food included. Airfare will be approximately $300, depending on how soon you join the group and lock in the lower fare (join now!).

Alternative Spring Break: El Salvador (Mar 12, 2011)
Volunteer your Spring Break by traveling with us to El Salvador to participate in an unforgettable service learning opportunity from March 12-19.
We will begin with an introduction to the history of El Salvador when we arrive in the capital of San Salvador. We will be visiting various sites including those related to martyrs such as Monsenor Romero, which includes traveling to the chapel where he was assassinated. We will then be spending three full days in the eastern side of El Salvador visiting communities with a variety of sustainable and community projects. These are “repopulated” communities where inhabitants are those that had fled the city during the civil war to find refugee camps. We will be entering into the reality of these people, perform a critical analysis and discern our call to act in solidarity with those organizing to create a more just and humane world. In addition to the knowledge we will be gaining of social justice in this region, we will also enjoy the Salvadoran culture, experience papusas and participate in a local recreation activity!
For more info on grants, fundraising, and how to join the trip, visit the Alternative Spring Break page at http://www.callutheran.edu/student_life/community_service_center/AlternativeSpringBreak.php

Crafts with Women at Prototypes (Apr 2, 2011)
All students welcome- this event is NOT limited to female students.
Hobbies are an important part of the recovery process for women at Prototypes: when people recovering from addiction are bored they are likely to revert back to old habits. Thus teaching art and crafts provides an outlet for women that will ideally empower them to take control of their lives and break free from the controls of alcohol or drugs. Join the CSC for an afternoon of coffee and crafts with women at the center. There will probably also be an opportunity to work with children, as the women will likely have their kids with them. *If there are sufficient supplies, you will be welcomed to make a craft, but the priority is that the women make crafts and not have restrictions on materials.*
We will be making bracelets and earrings with the women, and simpler crafts with the children.
We will be carpooling to the Prototypes Center in Oxnard.
-

Nuru- Be Hope to Her (Feb 16, 2010)
A common problem in Africa is that young girls often times miss school or drop out completely in order fetch the water needed to run their households.
What if instead of having to choose between an education and fulfilling household chores, a young girl could choose both? What if the wells the community needs were placed at the schools where they could be maintained, cared for and accessed by the community, making an educational institution the center of it all?
As Nuru put its best thinking on strategic ways to end the cycle of extreme poverty in our partner communities, we came up with Water For Schools to couple the importance water sanitation and education through a single initiative. After conducting a series of hydro geological surveys in January 2009, Nuru was able to identify four viable sites - all at primary schools - where wells will be drilled as Nuru works to attract funding for these projects. Water For Schools is what BH2O+ has made possible. Learn more below about what you can do.
Nuru is sponsoring an experiential event called BH2O+ at colleges and universities across the United States in April 2010. The name BH2O+ is an acronym that stands for “Be Hope to Her.” Through BH2O+ students will
become advocates, creating awareness on their campuses about the need for clean water access in the developing world.
For more info or questions please contact Olivia Hancock ohancock@callutheran.edu.

Nuru- Be Hope to Her (Apr 15, 2010)
Walk a mile in her shoes getting water like our global neighbors...
Water accessibility is taken for granted in most societies in the developed world. Imagine if – just to get a cup of water – you had to walk for 25 minutes; or better yet, if, to have enough water for cooking, laundry and bathing, you had to carry a bucket of water for 25 minutes. Wouldn’t that drastically change your life?
Walk on a designated route through the CLU campus: with empty bucket for 15 minutes, then walk with buckets filled with water for 15 minutes.
Registration is $8 per person ($10 after April 5) – register online only at: http://www.nuruinternational.org/takeaction/bh2olocations.html
For more info contact Olivia Hancock at x 3209
On behalf of the women and girls in the developing world, Nuru asks you to “take a walk in her shoes” – by carrying her bucket of water on your head.
Be Hope To Her (BH2O+) is an experiential event designed by Nuru International for colleges, universities and city centers across the United States, including Cal Lutheran University this year! Through BH2O+, thousands of men and women will carry buckets of water on their heads like women and children in the developing world do everyday due to the lack of nearby clean water sources in their communities; BH2O+ participants, acting as advocates, will create change by spreading awareness and raising funds for sustainable projects in Nuru’s partner communities.

Speaker: the first Habitat volunteer (Oct 27, 2008)
Clive Rainey, first Habitat for Humanity volunteer and longtime staff member, knows firsthand what commitment to service means. Rainey frequently speaks about Habitat on college campuses, for affiliate gatherings and before service organizations all over the world, inspiring affiliates to build more houses faster.
Along the way, he has built houses in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo; helped construct the first building in Uganda after the fall of the Idi Amin regime, a two-room house for a widow; and spent time as Habitat’s first area director for Africa. Building homes with Habitat is a way to make hope tangible.
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit Christian housing ministry that works both to eliminate poverty housing around the world and to make adequate housing a matter of conscience and action. Habitat welcomes to the table partners from any faith – or from no faith – who are willing to pick up a hammer to help improve the lives of families needing decent shelter. The organization started in the United States in 1976, and today its work reaches around the globe.
Admission is free.
Co-sponsored by Campus Ministries and the Community Service Center.

Join your peer group or have us assign you to a group to work for the afternoon.
You MUST wear long pants, closed-toe shoes and long sleeves (poison oak, animals, and object hazards on-site).

Ice cream will be served on the way to the beach for reflection-- please enjoy some with the students.
