FACULTY GRANT TO PARTICIPATE IN SERVICE LEARNING TRIPS WITH STUDENTS
Student Leadership and Programs is making available grants to CLU faculty to accompany students on various co-curricular service-learning trips during the academic year. As a grant recipient, the faculty would be a full participant on the trip, engaging in the daily activities and the evening reflections alongside students. The faculty would also prepare two one-hour learning presentations based on their area of expertise connecting to the focus on the trip.
Urban Exchange to San Diego, October 6-9, 2011
- This trip focuses on immigration issues at the US and Mexico border. In previous years, we were able to travel over the border to learn about many issues related to immigration and how it affects people. With the US State Department’s travel warnings, we will not cross the border, but we are able to adapt that experience to visit similar agencies and institutions on the San Diego side of the border to try and understand this complex issue. We will be working with an agency called Transformational World Opportunities. http://web.mac.com/twobill/iWeb/TWO/Welcome.html
- Cost: $100-150. The grant could cover this fee in its entireity. All travel and meals are included as part of attending the experience.

Prototypes Shelter Overnight, February 10-11, 2012
- Prototypes' mission is to rebuild the lives of women, children, and communities impacted by substance abuse, mental illness, and domestic violence. While at Prototypes women work on developing self-sufficiency skills such as vocational and parental training. Women in the shelter can be self-admitted or referred through a family member or another agency.
- While at Prototypes, we will join the women in their program schedule, enjoying meals, helping with chores, lending a hand with child care, etc. There is ample time to sit and connect with the women, who often share aspects of their experience in recovery as trust builds between our students and them women. Often times, our group is invited to join in the AA or NA meeting that is on-site that night. Students spend the night with the women in their dorms in the open beds. A typical Saturday involves either a yard or house work day, and there are also times that our students will put together a special children's activity for the kids who are around. Prototypes is a wonderful place for our students to learn about the human sides of addiction, "the system," and recovery.
- Learning presentation would be reduced to a 30-45 minute presentation as this is only an overnight.
- Cost: Free
Please note that this agency is a residential treatment center for women, and thus only open to students and faculty of the same gender. |
