Program Requirements

Major Requirements for a B.A. in Music:

46 credits minimum, 20 credits upper division; Music 101, 107, 108, 109, 110, 111, 112, 207, 208, 209, 210, 211 (includes piano proficiency exam), 301, 302, 309, 407, 475; eight credits of applied lessons with four upper division; eight credits of large ensemble with four upper division.

The following Emphasis Areas are in addition to the requirements for the Music Major:

Performance Emphasis:
  • 12 credits minimum; Mus 439, 375, 154/354; four upper division semesters of applied lessons
  • Voice/Piano majors may use one of the following in lieu of 1 unit of Mus 354: Mus 543(2) or Mus 545 (2)
  • Percussion majors may substitute Mus 160/360 for Mus 354
Composition Emphasis:
  • 11 credits minimum; Music 439, 200, 375; four upper division credits of Mus 347 applied lessons (Composition)
  • Composition majors must take a minimum of two semesters of Music 140/340 (piano)
Music Education Emphasis:
  • 13 credits minimum; Mus 439, 200, 423, 424; 410 or 411
  • Candidates of a California Secondary Teaching Certificate should contact the School of Education for a complete list of the requirements for a Single Subject Waiver in Music.
Music Technology Emphasis:
  • 12 credits minimum; Mus 439, 200, 300, 400, 492
Church Music Emphasis:
  • 12 credits minimum; Mus 439, 392, 410, 492 Applied lessons may be divided between voice and piano/organ (minimum of four required in piano/organ)
  • Rel 332 (History of Christianity II: Reform and Reformation) or Rel 357 (Martin Luther) recommended for upper division religion requirement. Recommended participation in Lord of Life Worship Team.
Musical Theatre Emphasis:
  • 12 credits minimum; TA 133, 334; Mus 403, 370, 337

Requirements for a Minor in Music:

20 credits minimum, 10 credits upper division; Music 101, 107, 108, 109, 110, 111, 112, 309; Piano Proficiency. Electives including applied lessons and Large Ensemble.
