Psychology Departmental Mission Statement

Psychology is the systematic and scientific study of human functioning.  Human psychology is the result of biological, developmental, cognitive and social processes.  Psychologists study these processes through the application of the scientific method and apply their findings to understanding human behavior in a wide variety of contexts.  The Psychology major at CLU is designed to expose students to the theoretical and empirical foundations of the discipline as well as the applications of established principles to behavior change.  As a result of majoring in Psychology, students are prepared for graduate work in the discipline as well as to apply the concepts and skills they acquire in a variety of career settings and to enhance their personal lives. 

 

Program Goals and Learning Outcomes

Goal 1: Field Specific Knowledge

Psychology majors will be familiar with the major theoretical approaches and discoveries in the discipline.

Students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of theory and empirical discoveries in learning and cognition.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of theory and empirical discoveries in the areas of personality and social processes.

3. Demonstrate knowledge of the processes that are the physiological bases of behavior.

4. Identify the research methods employed by psychologists.

5. Develop an understanding of at least one applied area of psychology (i.e. clinical, behavior modification, organizational, etc.)

Goal 2: Empirical Methodology and Critical Thinking

Psychology majors will be able to apply the major research methods used in psychology to answer questions and be able to interpret and evaluate the results and conclusions derived through these methods.

Students should be able to:

1. Locate relevant research, theory, and information necessary to plan, conduct, and interpret results of research studies. (Information Literacy)

2. Formulate a testable research hypothesis.

3. Collect, analyze, and report data designed to answer a psychological question under appropriate supervision.

4. Apply and interpret basic descriptive and inferential statistics.

5. Place research questions in an appropriate theoretical context.

6. Demonstrate understanding of the appropriate use of various research designs for addressing different types of questions and hypotheses.

7. Evaluate the appropriateness of conclusions presented in disseminated research relevant to psychology. (Information Literacy)

8. Demonstrate understanding of APA guidelines for the ethical treatment of human and nonhuman research participants. (Ethical Behavior and Professional Judgment)

Goal 3.  Application of Psychology

Students will be able to apply psychological principles to individual and social issues.

Students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate the application of psychological principles/models to human problems, both individually and collectively

2. Explain behavior using different psychological theories or models.

3. Construct examples of how psychological theories and principles relate to everyday life

4. Treat individuals in applied settings according to the APA ethical guidelines (Ethical

Behavior and Professional Judgment).

Goal 4.  Communication Skills

Students will be able to express themselves professionally and effectively in writing and oral presentations.

Students should be able to:

1.  Write a paper or essay that:

-  has a clear focus/purpose

-  uses appropriate sources and information

-  clearly synthesizes information to support the focus/purpose

-  conforms to the conventions of standard English in grammar

-  uses the vocabulary of psychology appropriately

-  cites and references sources according to APA guidelines

-  presents table and graphs in formats consistent with APA guidelines

 

2. Orally present their research in a way that:

                       -  is clearly organized and articulate

                       -  uses clear visual aids to present results
