We Don't Haze: Bystander Intervention for Hazing and Bullying Intervention

In these sessions, participants will hear from Elizabeth Allan, a professor of higher education at the University of Maine and executive director of StopHazing. The nationally renowned expert on hazing will discuss findings from her research, discuss the distinctions between bullying and hazing, and train on bystander intervention approaches to reduce bullying and hazing culture within K-12 schools, colleges, and university institutions.

K-12 Session

Issues of hazing within schools are a critical concern for educators in K-12 settings. Within the past few years, news reports of hazing incidents among athletic teams and student organizations have illuminated the realities of hazing and the many negative consequences these behaviors can bring to a community. In this session, Professor Allan, a nationally renowned expert on hazing, will discuss findings from her research, discuss the distinctions between bullying and hazing, and train on bystander intervention approaches to reduce bullying and hazing culture within K-12 schools.

College Session

12:00pm - 4:00pm
Three out of five college students experience hazing at some point during their time there. As a result, understanding how to stop hazing and change the cultures that allow such behaviors to exist within these institutions becomes essential. In this session, Professor Allan, a nationally renowned expert on hazing, will discuss findings from her research, discuss the distinctions between bullying and hazing, and train on bystander intervention approaches to reduce bullying and hazing culture within college and university institutions.
