2018 Clinical Supervisors of the Year

The Clinical Supervisor of the Year Award is given to PsyD and MFT clinical supervisors that graduate students nominate as excelling in their extraordinary mentorship.Ourclinical supervisors are essential to the instruction of our students as they provide mentorship and transmit to students the knowledge and ethos of their professions.

This year we were privileged to offer the 2018 PsyD Clinical Supervisor of the Year Award to Dr. Ryan Sharma. Dr. Sharma is an Associate Professor and the Director of Clinical Training in the PsyD Program, and is board certified in cognitive and behavioral psychology. PsyD students in CLU Community Counseling Services practicum have received clinical supervision from him in learning and applying Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Students praised Dr. Sharma's helpfulness and how thoughtful he is. They highlighted that he helps students grow as clinicians and push themselves forward to cultivate professional excellence. Students find him to be understanding and emphatic, mentioned that he brings humor into the room, and liked how he encourages them to develop their own style.

Ellyn Goldstein was chosen to be the 2018 MFT Clinical Supervisor of the Year. Ellyn has been supervising trainees and interns at Cal Lutheran since 2011.  She is also an adjunct MFT faculty member and has been teaching MFT Specialization classes that cover the Recovery Model and Psychological Trauma.  Ellyn is described by students as knowledgeable, caring, and astute and as a professional who is always available for guidance and support. She is valued as a role model and one student described her as one of the most humble experts I have ever known.

2018 MS in Counseling Psychology Alumni Award to Dr. Geoff Buckley

Dr. Geoff Buckley is a graduate of the MFT program at CLU and has been a licensed marriage and family therapist since 1985. He and his wife, also a therapist, have a private practice in Newbury Park. Geoff sees a wide variety of clients dealing with individual and relationship problems. He has experience supervising interns and trainees, has led numerous workshops, seminars, and therapy groups, and with his wife Kathleen, hold day-long workshops for couples. Geoff has been an adjunct professor in psychology and counseling at Pepperdine and CSUN since 2001 and at CLU since 2009. Geoff and his wife have authored a workbook for teaching communication to couples and he is currently completing a textbook in couple counseling for students.

2018 PsyD in Clinical Psychology Alumni Award to Dr. Kristen Roye

Dr. Kristen Roye received her doctorate of clinical psychology from California Lutheran University and was part of the first cohort to graduate from the PsyD program. During her time at Cal Lutheran she specialized in intimate partner violence and found a passion for attachment theory, which she used in her dissertation: Assessing Adult Attachment Using the California Q-Sort. Dr. Roye is a native resident of Ventura County and has a passion to help those struggling with mental health and substance use in her community and surrounding areas. She has worked in the mental health field for a variety of agencies including Ventura County Behavioral Health, BHC Alhambra Hospital, and Casa Pacifica. She currently works as the Director of Treatment Services for Destinations, where she works with her highly committed team to provide the community, adolescents, and their families: treatment, education, support and a sense of relief.  She recently began working with Cal Lutheran to create a training program for PsyD practicum students. In addition to Destinations, Dr. Roye also works as a senior adjunct professor at Cal Lutheran and teaches in both the PsyD and Bachelor’s Degree for Professionals Programs.


2018 MS in Clinical Psychology Alumni Award to Deirdre Smith

Deirdre graduated from the MS Clinical Psychology program in 2016. Since graduating from Cal Lutheran, she has been the director of a non-profit community re-entry program for individuals on active state parole called the Santa Barbara Day Reporting Center, which is run by Community Solutions out of Bloomfield Connecticut. She manages a staff of 9, oversees the entire facility and budget, and serves as the head case manager for approximately 40 clients. She is currently managing four Santa Barbara County Probation programs. Deirdre is also highly involved in the Santa Barbara re-entry and criminal justice community and serves as a voting member of the Santa Barbara County Re-Entry Steering Committee, co-chairs the Santa Barbara Probation Evidence Based Practices Quality Assurance Committee, and is active on several other committees that are committed to linking parolees and individuals on probation with community resources that will assist them in reintegrating successfully into their communities while reducing recidivism. Deirdre has given presentations on reducing recidivism using evidenced based practices both at the local and state levels, most recently to the Secretary of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Scott Kernan in October 2017. Deirdre is participating in a research project run by Dr. John Coie of Duke University. The protocol title is "Reduction of Recidivism through Neurofeedback Training" and they are in the first year of three years of collecting data after receiving approval from the State of California Health and Human Services Agency Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects in 2017.
