Transferring Credits

All incoming students must have completed at least 24 hours of credit at a regionally accredited college or university.

There is no cap on the number of college-transferable credits you can transfer toward the 124 credits needed to graduate. However, you must complete at least 30 of the final 40 upper-division credits at Cal Lutheran (upper-division courses have course numbers in the 300s and 400s).

If you have any questions about transfer credits, give us a call at 805-778-8948 or 866-944-8289 (toll-free).

Credit transfer policies

  • You must complete 30 of your final 40 credits in residence prior to graduating at Cal Lutheran. This requirement cannot be met using the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), portfolio or credit by examination.
  • You may apply a maximum of 20 credits of correspondence and/or extension work toward your overall degree. However, these credits cannot be used to fulfill the requirements of your major courses. The correspondence and/or extension coursework must be applicable to a bachelor’s degree at the granting institution.
  • Students who have completed an approved state transfer (e.g., IGETC, CSU Breadth Certification, Associate Degree for Transfer) or 60 credits in transfer (excluding military credit) will have satisfied their undergraduate general education requirements, known at Cal Lutheran as IDEAS. (Students will still be responsible for satisfying the Content Requirements of IDEAS, included in each of the majors.)
  • Generally, the following types of courses do not qualify for transfer credit:
    • Basic or manual skills such as typing or stenography
    • Vocational or technical skills
    • Personal enrichment (continuing education or certification)
    • Remedial courses or duplication of previous courses

Transfers from Joint Services Transcripts

Veterans can transfer up to 40 military credits from Joint Services Transcripts. These credits are applicable as elective credits and go toward the 124 total credits needed to graduate. See our veterans resources page for more information.

California Community College Transfers

Cal Lutheran has special arrangements with many nearby community colleges, known as articulation agreements. These arrangements allow certain courses to be transferred to Cal Lutheran for credit. These courses can count toward your general education and some courses may count toward your major requirements.

Use our articulation agreement search tool to find whether your institution or specific courses are part of this agreement:
