BUS 537 - Sustainable Business Strategies / Green Business
What makes a business model green and profitable? Brendon Cussio, Vice President of Finance and Marketing at Solarsilicon Recycling Services, LLC, speaks about the company and explains how silicon waste can be processed and reused, instead of simply being tossed into landfills.
Sustainable businesses operate across all sectors from production of conventional goods/services to developing new breakthrough technologies. Companies that incorporate environmental, health and social value into their business activities show financial success, benefit many stakeholders, and can better leverage global challenges for long-term profitability and growth.
This course explores the tremendous impact the sustainability movement is having on core business strategies and building competitive advantage.
BUS 585 - Sustainable Business Operations
This course combines an exploration of the concepts of sustainable operations management with all types of enterprises, services as well as products; and provides a practical applications exercise through use of an on-line simulation game. The on-line simulation places the student in the role of operations manager of a multi-plant organization making and executing decisions on personnel, facilities and equipment to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and profitability of the overall enterprise.
Operations management, planning and decision-making activities within an enterprise are studied from two perspectives: first, the theory of the activities within operations management; and second, the applicability and execution within the "sustainable" enterprise. The course provides insights into the trade-offs associated with sustainable operations management decisions and introduces a variety of tools and techniques for assisting managers to make production decisions for both goods and services, implement them in a global ecological environment, and achieve triple bottom line goals for the organization.
BUS 596 - Business of Renewable Energy Technologies
Students have opportunity to see the concept of producing cost-competitive renewable energy solutions in action on a tour to eSolar power plant in Lancaster, CA.
Renewable Energy Technologies are becoming more and more mainstream. Many countries around the world, including the United States, are instituting policies in support of the development of renewable energy power plants. This course aims to bring an understanding of the technologies, business opportunity, financing and regulatory aspects, and "how to put it all together".
A wide range of topics including ocean, hydroelectric, biomass and biofuels, geothermal, wind and solar technologies will be examined. The course explores the status of renewables and current government initiatives, provides a comparison of global business landscapes in support of renewable energy, and evaluates business prospects of developing alternative energy power plants in the United States and abroad.
BUS 597 - Sustainable Marketing
How does green marketing differ from conventional marketing? Students will combine the strengths of conventional marketing with the sustainability perspectives to develop a marketing campaign to educate consumers and influence their behavior.
Bill Camarillo, Agromin CEO, is the course keynote guest speaker talks about the importance of building strong brand and developing relationships with local communities.
This course is structured around strategic, functional and tactical marketing activities and decisions. The major theme of the course is how marketers can reinvent strategy and craft solutions assuming a sustainable paradigm that represents a circular use of resources, not the linear approach that leads to waste and pollution of ecosystems.
Throughout the course, the emphasis will be on how social and environmental aspects are integrated in every step and every action of the whole marketing process. The course also addresses the increasing demand for green products – environmentally-friendly, safe and beneficial for consumers. The triple bottom line framework is discussed with focus on how the sustainability concept inspires new product innovations and brings life-cycle awareness into the product design process.

Adrian Tylim teaches a course on business of sustainable / renewable technologies. He worked as an engineer for a leading wind energy consulting company and was involved in the modeling and simulation of NASA's Space Station's Solar Dynamic Power Module. At present, as President of All Energy Matters, Inc., he is focused on the development of solar and waste-to-energy power plants in the USA and international markets. The Dolce Foundation Inaugural Scholarship
The Dolce Foundation has partnered with the School of Management at California Lutheran University to support the development of the Sustainable Business professional track. The Foundation promotes sustainability in higher education and business practices. The Dolce Foundation recognizes that this program will deliver value to the community and our future business leaders. This scholarship will be awarded based on student academic achievement and financial need.
Please read the following requirements for eligibility:
- Applicants (MBA, or post-MBA certificate student) must be enrolled in the MBA Sustainable Business Professional Track (confirmed with the registrar office) and
- have completed at least one Sustainable Business elective course with a B or better;
- meets GPA requirements of a 3.0 or higher cumulative;
- demonstrates interest and involvement in sustainable business activities and projects (i.e., participation in local community programs or workplace projects; the Cal Lutheran campus projects or the School of Management sustainability-related events and activities);
- meets the Financial Aid Office requirements
The scholarship applications will be accepted from May 1st to June 30th. An eligible candidate must write a statement that addresses the 1-4 requirements (eligibility for financial aid is to be determined by the Financial Aid office).
