The Cal Lutheran Alumni Board of Directors Awards Program recognizes the outstanding achievements of California Lutheran University alumni. Nominations for awards in the five categories listed below are welcomed from all members and friends of the Cal Lutheran community.

Lyle Sladek
Honorary Alumni
Dr. Lyle Sladek’s retirement in 1994 brought to a close his tenure as the most recognizable member of CLU’s Mathematics Department. Of his selection as an honorary alumni, he jokes, “For most of you it took just four years, whereas for me it has taken 31 years to achieve this status.” This natural sense of humor is part of what his students appreciate in him, as well as his gift for his field. In his own words, his contribution has been to provide a “sense of stability and continuity” to the math department. In looking back, Sladek cherished “the friendship of many, many students and former students who are out there contributing to a better world.” In looking back, we will cherish this slender man on the rickety bicycle.
