First thing’s first: file your FAFSA
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the federal financial aid application that must be completed by anyone seeking federal or state financial assistance from an educational institution in the U.S. Our FAFSA school code is 001133. This form must be submitted each academic year.
Grants and Other Assistance
Students who graduated from a Program for Accelerated College Education (PACE) program at a partner California community college are eligible to receive a $100 per credit tuition reduction. Students must enroll full-time to receive this reduction. This award cannot be combined with the Employer Discount.
Cal Lutheran is a Yellow Ribbon University. Students who may be eligible for veteran’s benefits should contact their local Veterans Affairs Office or contact Cal Lutheran’s Office of Veteran Resources for specific information.
Many companies offer tuition assistance to employees who participate in work-related or degree-oriented college programs. We provide a deferred payment option (up to six weeks after the end of the term) for students who take advantage of their company’s tuition reimbursement opportunities.
Cal Lutheran has partnered with local organizations to offer a discount to their employees. If you are affiliated with one of the organizations listed here, you are eligible to receive a $100 per credit tuition discount.
A Cal Grant may be available to eligible California residents who transfer from a California Community College, based on family income, assets and GPA. A minimum of three credits per term are required. Applicants must file a FAFSA form or California Dream Act application and a Cal Grant GPA Verification Form. Visit the Cal Grant website for deadline information. by March 2 of each year.
Under the Federal Pell Grant program, eligibility will be determined based on the information submitted on the FAFSA. This grant is awarded to students with high financial need.
Federal Direct Subsidized Loans
Eligibility for the Federal Direct Subsidized Loan is determined by the FAFSA and is based on need. The government pays the interest while the student is in school. Students must be enrolled at least half time (three or more credits) to receive a Federal Direct Subsidized Loan.
Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans
Eligibility for the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan is determined by the FAFSA and is not need-based. Students must be enrolled at least half time (three credits or more per term) to receive a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan. Eligibility will be determined by the Office of Financial Aid.
Alternative/Private Loans
Students should always utilize any awarded Federal Direct Loans prior to seeking an alternative loan. Interest rates on alternative loans are often much higher than the Federal Direct Loan rates. Eligibility is determined by the lender. Alternative/private educational loans may only be taken out for up to the cost of attendance (less any financial aid received) as defined by the Office of Financial Aid.

Scholarships and Grants
Graduate Academic Scholarships are available to graduate and credential students based on financial need as demonstrated by the FAFSA or CADAA, provided they have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. This competitive scholarship may award up to $2,500 per academic year, dependent on full or part-time enrollment status and number of terms attending.
This scholarship application is open:
- July through August for ALL incoming and continuing students for the upcoming academic year
- January through February for NEWLY admitted spring term students only
Russell & Linda Young Scholarship (MBA and MSIT only)
The Russell and Linda Young Graduate Scholarship is an annual award provided to outstanding applicants to the MBA or MSIT programs. Eligible applicants must complete the general graduate scholarship application, submit a letter of motivation and be admitted before being considered for this scholarship. Applicants must also have a minimum 3.5 upper division undergraduate GPA. The scholarships will be awarded in the fall with four students receiving $2,500 each.
Local Organization Discount
Cal Lutheran has partnered with local organizations to offer their employees a $100 per credit discount on any of our graduate and professional programs (future terms only).
Community Scholars for Black Lives
Cal Lutheran established the Community Scholars for Black Lives program to empower students to work in tandem with community leaders and create conditions for Black lives to flourish. In addition to the $5,000 scholarship, recipients benefit from mentorship, conference travel funds and a project budget.
Congregational Partners in Education (CPE) Award
This award allows congregations of any faith to assist outstanding students who have demonstrated a commitment to the life and work of their place of worship. The University will match monies received from our partner congregations in support of a student attending Cal Lutheran full-time, up to $2,500 per academic year. This award may be renewed each year, up to three times, after the first year.

Cal Lutheran Donor Scholarships for Graduate School of Education Students

Access Grant
Access Grants are offered to AB 540 students, with eligibility and amount determined by completion of the California Dream Application. There are limited grants available. If offered a grant, the amount remains the same for all years of attendance at Cal Lutheran; the grant amount does not increase or decrease.

EdAssist Network
California Lutheran University and EdAssist have partnered to offer a $100 per credit tuition reduction for employees of select EdAssist partners for our graduate and professional programs.
To take advantage of this offer, simply list your participating employer on your application for admission. Graduate students will also need to submit a Graduate Financial Aid application in order to be awarded the tuition reduction for the correct semesters and units.
Reduced tuition is available for current and future semesters only. Prospective and current students who have not previously notified the institution of their EdAssist affiliation should contact the Graduate Admission Office at 805-493-3325 or soegradprograms@callutheran.edu.

Alternative student loans (also called education or private student loans) are designed to bridge the gap between college costs and traditional financial aid resources. They may be used to help pay for current semester expenses, past due balances from a previous semester or academic year, and can also be used for students who are enrolled less than half time.
