Skiba Named SCIAC Track Athlete of the Year

PASADENA, Calif. – Six Regals from the Cal Lutheran women’s track and field team earned All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) honors, highlighted by Melissa Skiba who was named SCIAC Track Athlete of the Year, as it was announced by the conference this week.

Skiba, a senior from Simi Valley, Calif., capped off an incredible conference career with two more individual titles to become a six-time SCIAC champion. She cruised to wins in the 1,500m (4:32.68) and the 5,000m (17:22.35) and is the first CLU Track Athlete of the year since Julea Juarez won the award in 2012. Furthermore, Skiba holds the top time in the nation in the 5,000m and was honored with the Jennifer Stary Character Award.

Allie Hadley set a new meet record in the Javelin (46.18m) at the SCIAC championships to ensure her all-conference recognition. The junior thrower has now claimed the individual title for the third straight year and she holds the top mark in the nation in Division III this season.

Junior Amanda Hamilton claimed her second individual title in the Triple Jump after leaping 11.95m for a first place finish and garnered All-SCIAC recognition for the third straight season. She also ran the opening leg of the third-place 4x400 Relay team that finished with a time of 4:03.46. Joining Hamilton in the race was the freshman trio of Anna Schlosser, Carlie Burow and Savannah Sipes who earned conference accolades after they reached the podium in the event.

The SCIAC Field Athlete of the Year was awarded to Vaiva Palanus from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Athenas freshman Tyra Abraham hauled in Newcomer of the Year honors. Coach of the Year went to Kirk Reynolds of Pomona-Pitzer.
