Regals Earn Home Opening Victory

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – On a chilly SouthernCalifornia afternoon the Cal Lutheran women’s tennis opened their home schedule with a 7-2 victory over Ventura College at the Poulson Tennis Center.   

The Regals got out to a 2-1 lead after winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.  Jacqueline Ramsay and Lauren Toohey put the first point on the board for CLU with an 8-2 win at No. 3 before Lindsay Murphy and Carly Mouzes teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 2.

In a close match, Emily Werman and Sarah Baker narrowly fell, 8-6, to Sonia Landeros and Christy Palido in the No. 1 position.

Baker wasted no time bouncing back, earning the first singles point of the day for the Regals with easy 6-1, 6-1 wins in the No. 2 spot. Murphy followed up with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the No. 3 singles spot to push the CLU lead to 4-1.  

The match clincher then came from Mouzes who earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Kayleigh Rodriguez at No. 4 to give Cal Lutheran their first win of 2013.

After the match, Mouzes discussed the performance of the Regals.

Ramsay went on to win 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 before the two most competitive matches went final. A hard fought battle at No. 1 ended with Werman falling to Landeros by 7-5 (7-5), 6-4 margins. Toohey then closed out the afternoon with 6-4, 6-4 wins over Suzanne St. Claire at No. 6.

Cal Lutheran (1-1) has a quick turnaround, returning to the Poulson Tennis Center tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 8 at 2:00 p.m. to host Hope International.
