Teachers Get Into Science with CLU's Amgen Summer Science Institute

More than 60 local science teachers are going beyond the world of Bunsen burners and test tubes this month as they participate in the Amgen Summer Science Institute at CLU. The program, which includes generous stipends, is geared to middle and high school science teachers to improve science education in their classrooms.

Funded by a $135,000 grant from The Amgen Foundation, the institute is being held for the second consecutive year on the CLU campus. Weeklong workshops are team–taught by two CLU faculty members – one from the science division and one from the School of Education. Sessions on Life Science (taught by David Marcey, Ph.D., and Julia Sieger, Ed.D.), Marine Science (taught by Andrea Huvard, Ph.D., Henry Alegria, Ph.D., and Leah Herner, Ed.D.) and Physical Science (taught by Michael Shaw, Ph.D., and Michael McCambridge, Ed.D.) were completed earlier this month. A workshop on Earth Science (taught by William Bilodeau, Ph.D., and Beverly Bryde, Ed.D.) is being held this week.

In addition to on–site classes, participants are given instructional materials to use in their classrooms and share with other teachers.
