Cal Lutheran String Symphony to perform

(THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – April 3, 2017) The California Lutheran University String Symphony will present a concert featuring a special duo performance by graduating seniors on Friday, April 21.

The String Symphony Concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Samuelson Chapel on the Thousand Oaks campus.

The 24-piece orchestra composed of students and community members will present a variety of works by composers Percy Grainger, Gustav Holst, Henry Purcell, Dmitri Shostakovich and Claude Smith. The symphony, which debuted this year, performs repertoire from the Baroque through modern eras.

Graduating seniors Mickey da Silva of Thousand Oaks and Samuel Grandfield of Newbury Park will join forces in a virtuosic duo by George Frideric Handel-Johan Halvorsen. Da Silva, a physics and chemistry major and math minor who received a Department of Homeland Security Summer Fellowship, and Grandfield, a biochemistry major and president of the Beta Beta Beta biological honor society, have both played with the university’s Honors String Ensemble.

Symphony conductor Yoshika Masuda is a cello lecturer at Cal Lutheran and will serve as director of string studies and assistant professor of music starting in fall. He began playing the cello at the age of 5 and studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music in the United Kingdom, where he graduated with distinction. He has performed across the United States, Europe and Asia and holds a doctorate in musical arts from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where he studied with the legendary cellist Ralph Kirshbaum.

The concert is free, but donations will be accepted.
