Now is the Time – Capital Ideasfrom Julius Bianchi

More than 40 years and six major buildings in the last 17 years (Pearson Library, Ahmanson Science Center, Samulson Chapel, Soiland Humanities Center, the Apartments, and the Spies–Bornemann Center for Education and Technology), the time has come to replace facilities that were once deemed temporary. Just as the capital portion of the current campaign replaced the School of Education’s Benson House, new classroom, office and athletic facilities are needed to replace the 1961 vintage gym complex.

The North Campus will include an aquatics center, baseball and soccer facilities, and a sports and fitness center. The Exercise Science and Sports Medicine Program will have classroom and laboratory space in the center. The high–tech learning environment will incorporate motion capture and analysis, biomechanics, electromyography and metabolic measurement – all very science–based, including applications for the bioengineering program. ESSM is one of the fastest growing majors at CLU with more than 100 students.

The center will also include
&nbsp• an events center suitable for seating 300 for seminars and meetings and up to 160 for meals;
&nbsp• two gymnasiums to support our NCAA Division III/SCIAC teams as well as CLU’s growing intramural program for all students; and
&nbsp• recreation and fitness facilities for all students, faculty and staff

According to the National Center for Health Statistics of the Center for Disease Control, 64 percent of U.S. residents are overweight or obese, and one in four Americans has low to no physical activity. So this facility will help all of us and may contribute to lowering our health care costs.

If you have not considered a pledge to the Now is the Time campaign, many worthy giving opportunities are available for the capital portion. Bricks, tiles, spectator seats, VIP seats, or lockers mark some of the ways to support the Campus Campaign. Remember, it is not the size of the gift, but giving a gift that makes the difference.

If you have questions about how to complete your pledge form, contact your team captain or Sue McQuilkin at x3156 or mcquilki@clunet.edu. Now is the time for CLU to add classroom facilities, office space, and sports and fitness facilities to attract students, and to ensure that our graduates are strong of body as well as mind and spirit.
