CLU, CSUCI Partner to Present State Algebra and Geometry Institute

Program focuses on helping teachers teach math

THOUSAND OAKS, CA –– California Lutheran University (CLU) and California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) will collaborate again to present the annual California Mathematics Project Leadership Institute. As one of nine California Subject Matter Projects that is governed through the University of California's Office of the President, the institute will bring teachers from throughout the region to CLU for eight days this summer to study instruction methods for algebra and geometry.

This summer’s institute will address new California Content Standards in Mathematics that require teachers to strengthen their own content knowledge and strategies to accommodate the introduction of algebra and geometry fundamentals as early as Kindergarten.

To help ensure that every California student achieves the highest standards of performance in mathematics, the California Mathematics Project provides professional development opportunities for teachers of mathematics in grades K–12. There are currently 23 Mathematics Project sites at UC and CSU campuses. The CLU/CSUCI site, hosted at CLU in Thousand Oaks, is the only one located at an independent university. This year’s institute will be held from June 27–30 and July 5–8.

Dr. Yvonne Lux, CLU School of Education, will serve as director of the CLU/CSUCI site. Dr. Ivona Grzegorczyck and Dr. Cynthia Wyels of the CSUCI/CLU math departments, will serve as instructors. Jacqueline Gilmore, CSUCI School of Education, is the project’s co–director. For additional information, please contact Dr. Lux at (805) 493–3083.
