Lysdal–Moffitt To Join Nicaragua Study Group

Karla Lysdal–Moffitt (Early Childhood Center) has been accepted to participate with Lutheran World Relief (LWR) and Augsburg College (Minneapolis) Center for Global Education in the LWR Coffee Project in Nicaragua, Jan. 6–16. She will be learning about the social justice issues involved in the coffee trade, the second most consumed beverage in the world.

Her itinerary will include meeting with governmental agricultural officials, staying with a coffee farming family in the northern rainforest region of Matagalpa (where environmentally beneficial shade grown coffee is practiced), and with representatives of Equal Exchange, a pioneer project committed to fair trade business with small farm coffee growers. Fair trade enables small coffee farmers to participate in a more just economic process, ensuring a better future with fair wages, their children's education, and creating leadership roles for women.

While the group is in Nicaragua, LWR will be posting a Web site journal.?Log on at http://www.lwr.org/study.
