CLU Athletic Training Program Receives National Accreditation

(THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.) – California Lutheran University’s Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) has received accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), Interim Provost Joe Everson announced today.

The Athletic Training Education Program, one of four academic emphasis areas in the Exercise Science and Sports Medicine major, is committed to providing students with educational, clinical and professional growth opportunities that prepare them for board certification, for entry into the athletic training profession or for the pursuit of graduate education in athletic training, other health professions and /or exercise sciences.
“This national recognition validates the academic successes of our program,” said Everson, “It also gives CLU degrees a level of recognition that extends well beyond this region.”

“Achieving this distinction puts CLU’s Athletic Training Education Program in the company of some of the nation’s top schools,” said Bill Gear, M.S., A.T.C., Chair of the Exercise Science and Sports Medicine Department and Director of the Athletic Training Education Program. “This accreditation comes at a perfect time since CLU has recently started construction on the North Campus Athletics Complex which will include a 96,000–square–foot Sports and Fitness Center.”

Along with two major gymnasiums, an events center, a fitness center, a dance studio, offices and the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame, the center will provide a venue for state–of–the–art educational facilities for athletic training, the exercise sciences and physical education.

The CAAHEP accreditation standards are established by The American Academy of Family Physicians, The American Academy of Pediatrics, The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and The National Athletic Trainers’ Association, Inc.
