Scholar to discuss Lutheran tradition at CLU

Richard T. Hughes has written many books on American religion and Christian higher education.

Religious scholar Richard T. Hughes will discuss “The Lutheran Tradition and the Life of the Mind” at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at California Lutheran University.

Hughes, who earned a doctorate in the history of Christianity, is the Distinguished Professor of Religion and Senior Fellow at The Boyer Center at Messiah College in Grantham, Pa. He is the founder and former director of the Pepperdine University Center for Faith and Learning and was named “Faculty Person of the Year” by the college’s students.

He has written many books on American religion and Christian higher education, including “Models for Christian Higher Education: Strategies for Survival and Success in the 21st Century,” “The Vocation of a Christian Scholar: How Christian Faith Can Sustain the Life of the Mind” and the just-released “The Myth of Christian America.”

Hughes has been a strong voice in the national dialogue about the significance of Christian higher education for contemporary society. He has worked extensively on Lilly Endowment projects exploring religious schools in North America.

The free public lecture is part of a spring series on “The Reformation Heritage of CLU.” It will be held in the Roth Nelson Room on Mountclef Boulevard.
