Nordic Spirit Symposium

Sagas and the Viking World

Nordic Spirit Symposium

Our journey into Viking Age culture will probe the Icelandic sagas, a Viking legacy and contribution to world literature, as well as Viking Age art, life and beliefs. You are invited to experience this program with distinguished speakers and polished performers, and to share the time-honored spirit of a symposium, blending music, dining and the free exchange of ideas to enhance the pleasure of learning.

Friday evening schedule:

5:30 p.m. - Scandinavian Center, 26 Faculty St.
Reception. Reservations requested. Admission is $10.

7 p.m. - Samuelson Chapel
Admission is $20; free for students.
The program will open with an illustrated presentation of the narrative voice in woven tapestries that visually depicted the story of Sigurd the Dragon Slayer more than 200 years earlier than the oldest manuscript of this legend, followed by a fascinating look at pre-Viking and Viking Age artistic creativity.

“The Narrative Voice in Woven Tapestries”
Lena Norrman, Ph.D., Lecturer in Swedish, Department of German, Scandinavian and Dutch, University of Minnesota

“Scandinavian Animal Style Art from Migration Period Jewelry to Viking Age Ships”
Nancy Wicker, Ph.D., Chair, Department of Art, University of Mississippi

See separate entry for Saturday schedule.
