Interlibrary Loan Services

Purpose

To request from other libraries the loan of materials which are unavailable at the University Library. The borrowing of these materials is governed by the Interlibrary Loan Code for the United States, revised 2001.

Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions

The copyright of the United States (Title 17 US Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of the Copyright Law.

Request forms are available at the Information Commons Desk and online http://www.callutheran.edu/iss/research/forms/ill.php. Our information specialists are happy to assist you if you have any questions.

Submitting

If not submitting requests online, each patron (student, faculty, and staff) will need to fill out an appropriate ILL form (yellow for books, blue for articles) found at the Information Commons Desk. Each book and article request should be on a separate form. You may staple a complete citation of the item you are requesting to the form, but you must still fill out the patron information at the bottom, including your CLUnet e-mail address. Please do not turn in lists of books, articles, or documents. Also, please provide as much information about the item as possible. Incomplete citations will require more time and may not be available by the date you specify. Although there is no limit to the number of items that can be requested through Interlibrary Loan, please try to prioritize if turning in 10 or more.

Time Periods

Loan

The lending library will establish the loan period. For books, it is usually 3-4 weeks. Renewals are sometimes possible if requested BEFORE the due date. Photocopies are yours to keep.

Waiting

The waiting period is based on many factors, but we always try to obtain your material as soon as possible. Articles are usually delivered to your desktop within a few days; books can take about 5-10 days. Please plan your research needs ahead of time so that you have your material before your deadline.

Costs

Normally there is no charge for books. Most articles are sent via e-mail in PDF format for no charge.

If there are special lending charges, we will contact you. If you still choose to order the item, the University will absorb the first $5.00 per item of those special charges. Any balance will be the patron's responsibility and is payable in cash or by check. If we e-mail an article with charges to you, we will hold a fee slip at the Circulation Desk to be paid as soon as possible. Faculty are exempt from any ILL costs.

If a requester fails to pick-up a request, or to pay the balance due, the charges will be passed on to the patron's library record. This could directly affect registration or transcript requests.

Copy Charges

If a requested item is on microform, you may request the library Circulation Department to copy it for $.10 a page, to be paid for at the time of pick-up. Some limitations may apply.

Dissertations

As part of the Interlibrary Loan Services, CLU Pearson Library will borrow dissertations for patrons whenever possible. There may be a fee for this service, depending on the policies of the lender. The fee will not exceed $20.00. CLU Pearson Library will reimburse the individual $5.00 of this fee. Faculty and Graduate students in the EDD program are exempt from these charges.

Occasionally, due to the unavailability of a dissertation via Interlibrary Loan, CLU Pearson Library may choose to purchase the dissertation at no cost to the patron. The dissertation may them be borrowed as part of our circulating collection.

Individuals who would like to purchase a dissertation for themselves may do so by calling UMI at (800) 521-3042.
