Cyber Security

Keeping digital information secure is important, whether it is a single computer login password or several files containing confidential data. The purpose of this page is to focus attention on cyber security and provide helpful links and information to better safeguard your online account and computer.

Safeguard Your Account

  • Strong Password
    • The first and foremost line of account defense is a strong password.
    • No shorter than 8 characters in length and a combination of both letters, numbers and symbols.
    • A stronger password does not contain common dictionary words.
    • Reset your password at any time by going to callutheran.edu/password.
  • Password Protection
    • Never send passwords or other sensitive information through email communication.
    • For example, if writing to the Help Desk, do not send your password or other private information.
    • In the event of a password issue (e.g., forgot password, need to reset password, etc.), please call into the Help Desk rather than send an email.
  • Caution!
    • ISS will never send out emails asking you for your account information or password.
    • If you do receive a suspicious email of this nature, it is more than likely a phishing (scam) email; do not respond to it.
  • Secure Access to Your Computer
    • Locking a computer prevents access and safeguards your data. Any activity while logged into your CLU account, whether you know about it or not, is your responsibility. To lock your computer:
      • WINDOWS: press CTL+ALT+DELETE on your keyboard and choose "Lock Computer". To unlock your computer upon your return to your desk, press CLT+ALT+DELETE again, and type in your password.
      • MAC: open the Desktop & Screen Saver System Preferences panel, activate the Screen Saver tab, and click the Hot Corners button. Choose which corner of your screen you would like to use, then click the corresponding pop-up menu and select Start Screen Saver. To activate this, move your mouse into that corner of the screen, and the screen saver will start.

Safeguard Your Computer

  • Anti-Virus Software Updates
    • Be sure anti-virus and anti-spyware software is installed on your computer.
    • Continually check for software updates to ensure the best protection.
    • As a service for students, ISS can purge your computer of both viruses and spyware for a fee of $25 that is charged to your student account. To use this service, you will need to pay for the items using your credit card at https://commerce.cashnet.com/cluiss. Please bring your laptop with its power supply, or your desktop tower, to the Circulation Desk at ther Pearson Library and present your proof of payment at the time of receipt of goods or services.
  • Computer Use Policy
    • The Computer Use Policy governs use of Cal Lutheran’s computing resources including computers and related equipment, as well as local area networks and connections to larger networks, specifically, but not limited to, the Internet. CLU honors and respects the privacy and academic freedom of its members and strives to permit maximum freedom of use consistent with current University policy and state and federal laws. The Computer Use Policy can be found online here.
  • Updates to Operating Systems
    • Check for operating system (OS) updates. Such updates provide security fixes and patches that safeguard your entire system. This is important for both MAC and PC/Windows platforms.
  • Fraudulent Emails & Dangerous Attachments
    • If you receive a suspicious email message, do not open it. It may contain viruses or other questionable material, which may or may not be in the form of attachments.
    • Log on to CLU's spam filter at fortimail.callutheran.edu, enter your entire CLU e-mail address and your password.
    • If spam is delivered to your inbox, forward it to nospam@callutheran.edu or to the Help Desk at hepldesk@callutheran.edu; the sender's domain will be blocked at the CLU server level.
