"All my roommates have different beliefs, but we all feel welcome here."

Our Lutheran Heritage

Just as our first name, California, describes where we are geographically, our middle name, Lutheran, connects us to a 500-year-old educational tradition. We proudly share this tradition with 27 other U.S. Lutheran colleges and universities who, like us, are affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

Lutheran communities warmly welcome people of diverse nations and faith expressions.

The Lutheran tradition of higher education means we...

Respect the dignity of each individual and celebrate the rich array of religions, cultures and traditions represented on campus.

Embrace questions. We are not about stifling inquiry but encouraging it. We believe that intellectual and spiritual growth are not in conflict but complement one another.

Believe the responsibility and the ability to change the world for the better is within each of us and encourage each individual to discover paths of service for the greater good.

Provide a supportive environment to explore spirituality and nourish your faith on your own or with others through programs, worship and service.

Enrich the rigors of the academic environment with open dialog that explores faith and purpose without prejudice or fear of the consequences.

Encourage development of talents, abilities and interests as a means to more meaningful work, a deeper sense of vocation and greater joy in endeavor.
