How to Get Started

You have already taken the most important step by asking this question!

1) Take the Pre-Requisite Coursework

Most majors offer courses devoted to developing research skills. Consult with an academic advisor or faculty mentor to determine relevant coursework in your major and research interests. Taking the pre-requistes early in your educational journey will give you more time to do research later on.

2) Talk with Professors

Explore professors' scholarly interests and share with them your interests. They chose Cal Lutheran to work with young scholars and are eager to collaborate with you. Inquire about their current research and how you can contribute. You can find their emails by looking in the Cal Lutheran Faculty Directory  In the directory, look at their publications and area of expertise. After you find someone that is doing work you're interested, reach out with an email. Consider browsing their research articles and noting a few questions or ideas to chat about with them when you meet with them. During your meetings, ask about the faculty members' areas of interest and if they are currently working on any projects that could use your assistance. Don't be disappointed if they cannot plug you into a project right away. You may also ask about other faculty in your discipline or other disciplines.

3) Apply to work in a Lab, with a Professor, or on a Research Team

Once you have completed the prerequisites and consulted with professors, it's time to start researching! You won't be conducting research alone; join a lab or research team, or work with a professor to begin your explorations. To join a lab or research team, reach out to professors as described above. You can ask if they have spots available on their team, and what the application process is. You can also ask them for recommendations of other faculty to reach out to.
