Dr. Alan Goodwin, Director
The Director of Student Counseling Services, Dr. Alan Goodwin, is a California licensed psychologist (PSY19421) and attorney (CA Bar #156717). Dr. Goodwin also serves as the Director of Training at Student Counseling Services. Dr. Goodwin attended Southern Illinois University, where he earned Master's and Ph.D. degrees from SIU's APA accredited Counseling Psychology program. He completed an APA accredited internship at the Counseling and Psychological Services center at the University of California at Davis. Prior to becoming a licensed psychologist, Dr. Goodwin practiced law in California. He earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School and earned his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University. Trained as a generalist, his areas of expertise include anxiety and anger treatment and management, goal-directed and integrative treatment of depression, and recovery and addiction treatment. Dr. Goodwin embraces an integrative theoretical orientation that utilizes both traditional methods of western psychotherapy and helping techniques related to mindfulness and compassion whose origins (the techniques) are more closely connected to Eastern traditions. He also frequently conducts workshops for mental health professionals on matters of law and ethics.
Ginny Maril, Staff Clinician
Ginny Maril, Ph.D. serves as a Staff Clinician at Student Counseling Services. Dr. Maril completed her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Psychology degrees at the University of Dallas. She attended Texas Woman's University where she earned her Doctor of Philosophy from the APA-accredited Counseling Psychology program. She completed an APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship at Texas Woman's University Counseling Center and her post-doctoral fellowship at California Lutheran University. Dr. Maril's professional and research interests include living with chronic illness, caregiver stress, traumatic stress, existential theory, and social justice.
Gina Albani, Post-doctoral Fellow
Gina Albani, Psy.D., serves as the 2013-2014 Post-doctoral Fellow at SCS. After having worked professionally in jobs closely aligned with her undergraduate degree in Individualized Studies in Marketing, Gina returned to school at the University of St. Thomas, in Minnesota, where she earned Masters and Doctorate degrees in Counseling Psychology. With a particular interest in the application of mindfulness and yoga practices as ways of overcoming anxiety, Gina brings counseling skills and interests that fit wonderfully with the types of tools we seek to provide students at SCS. We are so pleased to have Gina on our team for this entire academic year!
Gregory Daven, Administrative Coordinator
Gregory Daven, M.F.T., runs the administrative activities at Student Counseling Services. A professional Marriage and Family Therapist by training, Greg is an invaluable resource to both students and to SCS. Greg brings knowledge and wisdom regarding how services should be provided. More even than these qualities, Greg's warm and generous presence is immediately noticeable to a visitor to SCS, as he is the daily flavored water chef, meditation music dj, and relaxation video director, all of which help to define the center as a place where comfort and humor lay a foundation for healing and learning.
