Program Requirements
Major Requirements for a B.A. in English:
- Minimum Credits: 32 credits minimum
- Upper Division Credits: 24
Emphasis Options
Option 1
- Required Courses: English 201, 301, 314, 452, plus three of the following: 323, 324, 325, and 326. All majors are required to take a departmental Capstone course. Required credits: 32 (24 upper division).
Option 2
- Required Courses: (Contract Major): 32 credits beyond Freshman English as a minimum, 24 upper division. Required courses are English 301 and 480. A specific program of courses must be developed with the advice and consent of an adviser in the department and must be approved by the department chair.
Writing Concentration
- Required Courses: Fulfillment of either Option 1 or Option 2 and must include any four of the following: English 302, 303, 304, 305, 306, or 307.
Option 3
- Option 3, the Subject Matter Program, is an extended English major for students interested in going on to teach at a high school level. The program has a minimum of 43-48 units and includes five specialty areas. If a student completes this major, he or she is excused from taking the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET). Otherwise, the CSET is a requirement for all single-subject teachers.

Prospective Graduate Student
- Minimum Credits: 36
- Upper Division Credits: 28
- Required Courses: English 201, 301, 314, 323, 324, 325 or 326, 452, 480
Requirements for English Minor:
- Minimum Credits: 20 credits beyond Critical Reading and Writing (English 111)
- Upper Division Credits: 12
- Students are encouraged to design their own minor, with advisor consent and department chair approval, to suit their intellectual and/or professional interests.
- For students who want to teach at the secondary level and want a minor in English, English 312, 314, 323 or 324, and 325 or 326 are recommended.
