Scheduling an Appointment
Remember that tutors are there to help you become a better writer overall, not just to improve a single piece of writing. Be ready to take an active role in your appointment, to answer questions your tutor might have, and to write, revise, and write again so that your own ideas and your own voice comes through in your paper. Your active involvement in your tutoring session will, in turn, help you become an independent, confident writer, capable of self-revising and self-editing your papers in future writing tasks.
Procedure:
Students can book appointments online here, by calling 805-493-3257, or by walking in. Appointments booked online can be made up to 1 week in advance.
While we do take walk-ins, we cannot guarantee that a tutor will be available for you without an appointment, particularly during busy periods of the semester.
Undergraduate Finals Week Policies
Students may only meet with a tutor by appointment during Finals Week.
This policy applies to all students.Appointments for Finals Week cannot be booked online due to our alternate schedule. Please call, email, or walk into the Writing Center to schedule.
All appointments must be scheduled before Finals Week.
Graduate Student Appointment Policy
Students are allowed one appointment per person per day and two appointments per week.
No graduate student may come in with the same paper more than once per day, have 2 tutors look at it at the same time (even if someone is free), or have back-to-back appointments with the same or different tutor.
Tutors are not available to review theses or dissertations because of the high-stakes nature of such projects.
Group Paper Policy
We welcome group writing assignments. However, tutors can only work with sections of the paper written by students who are present at the appointment.
This policy is in place because we believe that tutoring sessions are most effective when writers are available to answer questions and make their own writing decisions based on tutors' advice.
Things to Remember:
- Allow enough time between the appointment and the project due date to make any necessary revisions and to schedule a follow-up Writing Center visit. Tutors can help you with your initial problems and, on your second visit, they can check your work for effectiveness and accuracy.
- Be on time for your appointment. Tutors have to stay on schedule with their appointments, and they can only hold your appointment for 5-10 minutes if other students are waiting.
- Come prepared by bringing:
- a copy of the assignment, preferably double spaced
- relevant class notes
- an idea of what you want to focus on during your session
