Plans for the Fall 2021 Semester
For Traditional Undergraduate Students
Dear Cal Lutheran students,
We have finally reached the point where COVID-19 cases are decreasing and federal officials are projecting there will be enough doses to vaccinate all adults in the U.S. by the end of May. Given these positive trends, we are looking forward with great excitement to a more typical fall semester. As of now, we anticipate holding in-person classes for our traditional undergraduate students, having well over 1,000 students living in on-campus residential facilities, and sponsoring a wide range of co-curricular activities.
While we are eagerly planning for all of the above, we will, of course, follow all public health guidelines in place during the fall semester. This means that we may keep in place mask mandates, limits on gatherings, and/or other restrictions.
Here are some of the scenarios we are entertaining for the fall 2021 semester:
In-person classes — Cal Lutheran’s small class sizes make it feasible to accommodate physical distancing requirements or gathering limits should they be imposed. We are already mapping out options should we need to move certain classes into larger indoor spaces to allow for appropriate distancing. We are identifying outdoor classroom spaces that can be utilized as well.
Exceptions — We are exploring the extent to which we will be able to accommodate students with exceptional circumstances that would prevent them from attending in person. We anticipate these numbers to be very low, and we will have more information regarding this later this semester.
On-campus living — We plan to bring residence hall capacity back to 1,000-plus students. We are working with county officials and other experts to determine the appropriate number of quarantine and isolation rooms to set aside. Residence Life staff will continue to use public health guidelines as a framework for residential policies. If health trends and county guidelines continue to move in a positive direction, residential students will have many opportunities to get to know each other and get involved in in-person activities. If you are interested in living on campus, please visit the housing application page.
Co-curricular activities — We also are committed to rounding out the campus experience with athletics, performing arts, Student Life programming, and other co-curricular activities as allowed under health protocols.
We will be developing more detailed plans for fall. The best way to keep abreast of the latest updates is to routinely visit the KNOW site and to check your Cal Lutheran email.
We cannot wait to see our Thousand Oaks campus return to being a vibrant living and learning community filled with all types of personal and engaging experiences. Those experiences and interactions make Cal Lutheran the warm and special place that it is. We are so pleased that you will be a part of it.
