Celebrating Black History Month
Dear Cal Lutheran Community, As we get ready to enjoy the crisp air of February, we're not just turning the pages on our calendar; we're also ushering in our unique celebration of Black History Month. Here at Cal Lutheran, we use this month to do more than acknowledge history. We ensure it is a time to provide an interactive and engaging experience that honors the contributions African Americans have made in shaping the world. Via this note, I invite you to participate in the exciting programs that mark the Cal Lutheran celebration. Enjoy the rhythmic beats of Tamakan Rhythms and Spirit of Oya that will help us kick off the month on Feb. 2; consider a lecture lunch with Dr. Karen Crozier on Feb. 15 that is guaranteed to engage all who attend; or help us wrap up the month’s activities at the Celebration of Black Excellence on Feb. 29. Weekly Chapel Hour during the month will feature soulful experiences of African American spirituality while honoring the legacies of the Black church. This year’s Black History Month activities are made possible thanks to the work of colleagues in Campus Services, Media Services, Sodexo, and dedicated student groups. In addition, special recognition goes to several sponsors – Student Life’s Center for Cultural Engagement and Inclusion, Center for Teaching and Learning, Ethnic and Race Studies, Community Scholars for Black Lives Fellowship Program, Pearson Library, Center for Global Engagement, and the Office of Talent, Culture, and Diversity. Their support is not just financial; it's a sign of support for the values we hold dear as a community. As you peruse the official flyer or DEIJ Signature Events calendar, consider the listings within them as your invitation to be part of something bigger: the ongoing construction of a vibrant and inclusive community. Come be a part of it! Sincerely, |

- Spotlight on HSI Week / Enfoque en la Semana de las HSI
September 12, 2024With what I hope to be the hottest days of the academic year behind us — temperature wise — I am excited to share that this week California Lutheran University is celebrating National Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Week. Only 600 institutions in the United States have the honor of engaging in such festivities, and we are proud to be among them.
- Grateful for You
June 13, 2024To say I feel welcomed into this community would be the understatement of my working life. Since my first official day on the job, I have had the privilege of meeting many of you. You have welcomed me with open arms at local church services, a synod assembly, during impromptu conversations along "the spine," and at The Habit for lunch and Starbucks for coffee.
