Open Mic Night: Hip Hop Origins

Let's celebrate Black History Month with a space for creativity to speak volumes! Hip Hop music and spoken word are known to be similar in a cultural context because both arts speak on the experience of Black working class individuals experiencing oppression within their neighborhood, workplace, or educational institutions. Hip Hop music and poetry usually bring crowds together, whether it be a cypher or an Open Mic at a theater, but we want to try and bring this experience to you virtually!

The Center for Cultural Engagement and Inclusion will be hosting an Open Mic Night: Hip Hop Origins event via zoom to talk about the connection between hip hop and spoken word and how it is being used in modern activism today. After this, a competition will take place. Perform your rap or poem and have the chance to win a Gift Card!
