MS in Counseling Psychology (MFT) Program

The MFT program welcomes our new professor, Dr. Emma Hooper. She completed her PhD at Ohio State University in the Human Development and Family Science program with a Couple and Family Therapy (CFT) Specialization. Her research interests focus on emotional processes within the family and the role parents play in children’s emotion socialization and regulation. Hooper’s research has been published in the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, The Journal of Pediatrics, and Clinical Pediatric. At OSU, she taught courses in Family Development, Child Development, and Multicultural Programming for Young Children. Hooper joins Cal Lutheran’s Marital and Family Therapy program. This semester, Dr. Hooper is teaching Systems of Counseling, Gender and Sexuality, and Research Synthesis and Evaluation.

In other news, MFT students will find that beginning this fall we are implementing several new policies across our classes. For example, faculty will now use the same polices regarding attendance, lateness, grading, and late assignments across your courses. Participation points are being limited to 15% of a grade, no assignment will exceed 1/3 of a class grade, readings will be graduate level and should include more depth of content than provided by a single textbook, and your classes will include at least one test or exam. All syllabi this semester and going forward are being updated to reflect these changes. Taken together, classes should be more predictable as to their policies and we expect the increase in rigor will further prepare students for taking the licensing exams once graduated.
