Pass/No Credit

For Spring 2021 & Summer 2021

Graduate Students

Deciding to Switch a Class to Pass/No Credit (P/NC)

For graduate courses, a grade of Pass (P) is equivalent to the minimum passing grade for the program. A No Credit (NC) equals all failing grades below the minimum passing grade and will not count toward graduation.

(Note: These policies do not apply at PLTS)

Undergraduate Students

Deciding to Switch a Class to Pass/No Credit (P/LP/NC)

Undergraduate students can receive a Pass/Low Pass/No Credit (P/LP/NC) grade for any course during Fall 2020, Winter 2021, Spring 2021 and Summer 2021. Ultimately the decision to change the grading for a class from letter graded to Pass/Low Pass/No Credit (P/LP/NC) is the decision of each individual student.  The decision should be based on the specific situation.  The questions below are meant to assist undergraduate students with making the decision to change the grading for a class or classes.

  • What grade do you think you will receive in the class?
    • If you believe that you will be receiving a C- or higher, then you will receive a Pass grade in the class. Changing the class to P/LP/NC will not affect receiving credit in the class.
    • If you believe that you will be receiving a D+, D or D- in the class, changing to P/LP/NC will result in a Low Pass grade. A Low Pass grade will count towards graduation.
    • If you believe that you will receive an F grade, then changing to P/LP/NC would ensure that that grade in the class does not negatively affect your GPA. You would not receive credit in the class if you switched to P/LP/NC grading.
  • Is this a major course, Core 21 course or general elective?
    • Core 21 course: It is safe to change this course to P/LP/NC this semester.
    • General Elective: It is always ok to switch this type of class to P/LP/NC.
    • Major Course:
      • If this course is a prerequisite for a graduate program, like medical school, check with your faculty advisor or the graduate school to help determine if your desired graduate program will accept a Pass grade.
      • If this course is not a prerequisite for a graduate program, it is ok to change the class to P/LP/NC.
    • Do you need the grade in this class to raise your GPA above a 2.0, or as a graduating senior to meet the GPA requirement for Latin honors?
      • If the answer is yes and you are earning a good grade, you should not change to P/LP/NC.
      • If the answer is no to this question, you may consider change to P/LP/NC.
    • Does your employer pay for all or part of your tuition?
      • If the answer is yes, you should check with your employer’s policy regarding grading before making any changes.
      • If the answer is no, you may consider change to P/LP/NC.
    • Are you on Financial Aid Probation?
      • If the answer is yes, you should check with Financial Aid before making any changes.
      • If the answer is no, you may consider change to P/LP/NC.

Students who would like to change one or more courses to the P/LP/NC grading option must fill

out the P/LP/NC form available on the Academic Services website and submit it by midnight the night before final exams begin.
