British Art: In and Out of the Huntington

This class will give an overview of the works of artists including Thomas Gainsborough, Thomas Lawrence, George Stubbs, William Hogarth and Angelica Kauffman, and of the art of Britain starting from the founding of the Royal Academy of Arts.

During the 18th century, Britain began to establish itself as a leading art center with the establishment of the Royal Academy of Arts established by Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1768. The rise of British art in the 18th and the early part of the 19th centuries coincides with the time frame of the collection of British art at the Huntington Gallery in San Marino, California. 

Katherine E. Zoraster is an art historian and a professor of art history at several local colleges, specializing in Western art from the Renaissance to the 20th century. She graduated with a double major in English literature and art history from the University of California, Los Angeles. She received her master’s degree with distinction in art history from the California State University, Northridge.
