  • The Center for Academic Service-Learning (CASL) is pleased to announce the availability of Service-Learning Mini-Grants for faculty. The competitive mini-grants are available for the creation, expansion and/or improvement of service-learning projects within an academic course. Service Learning is an educational approach where a student learns theories in the classroom and at the same time volunteers with an agency (usually a non-profit or social service group) and engages in reflection activities to deepen their understanding of what is being taught. Applicants may request funding up to $500 for the Spring semester. Faculty (full-time, part-time, and adjunct) who teach courses at Cal Lutheran are eligible. For more information about service learning or the mini grant program visit https://www.callutheran.edu/centers/casl/, or email to casl@callutheran.edu.
  • Fifty and Better Students Want You! The Fifty and Better (FAB) students want to learn from Cal Lutheran faculty! FAB was designed for individuals 50 years of age and older (most are in their 70s & 80s) who are interested in taking university-level courses and lectures without the pressure of grades (no tests & no homework)! The majority of FAB courses and lectures are offered virtually, via Zoom. FAB offers 4-week and 6-week course sessions, individual 2-hour lectures, and 2-part lectures (meeting on two different days for a total of 4 hours). If a 4-week or 6-week course seems daunting, give a lecture instead!  Compensation is $200 per individual lecture and $400 for a 2-part lecture. FAB now offers lectures year-round, and is currently planning for March-August, 2023. The format is straight lecture with a PowerPoint. FAB students ask questions via the chat box.  Click here to submit a proposal. Questions? Contact Dr. Lisa Buono (x3663) or FAB’s Program Specialist, Christina Tierney (x3290).
  • Summer Professional Development Opportunity: Washington, DC. Faculty and staff interested in pursuing professional goals while living in Washington, DC for a two-week period between May-August 2023 are invited to submit an application to the Lutheran College Washington Semester Summer Research Program. Applicants who are accepted only pay $200 for two weeks of accommodations. Perhaps you wish to incorporate course content related to DC into your syllabus, conduct research in the area, or create experiential opportunities for students? Application deadline is March 15. Details provided online or contact ehasecke@washingtonsemester.org or global@callutheran.edu.

  • Fulbright-Hays Faculty/Administrator Seminar Abroad: Mexico: Post-secondary faculty and administrators (with preference for the Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences) are invited to apply for the July 2023 seminar abroad program for four weeks in Mexico. The program provides an in-depth exploration of a country to improve understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures. Following the seminar experience, participants develop and share a curriculum project to provide information about the selected country with one's local community in the USA. Applications are due February 9, 2023. Direct questions about Fulbright programs/applications to global@callutheran.edu.

  • Traveling for Business? Traditional Travel Reminder: Cal Lutheran remains in our standard operational mode of Traditional Travel status (see the university’s Travel Policy and Travel and Entertainment Expense Policy for general guidelines). In most cases, traditional travel is approved through one's immediate supervisor (for faculty and staff) or authorized university representative (for students). All students traveling beyond 200 miles from their home campus, and all faculty and staff traveling with students beyond 200 miles of their home campus or traveling internationally on a university-sponsored activity, should register their travel through the Travel Registry. A Travel Petition is still required for all university-sponsored travel to high-risk destinations. Please contact travelreview@callutheran.edu if you have any questions.

Please note that we look forward to a fully in-person event as much as possible, while continuing to give students the opportunity to post abstracts, posters and presentation videos on the website for additional exposure to a wider audience.
