Spotlight

 

  • Harold Stoner Clark Lecture Series presents Sean A. Valles, PhD, Associate Professor and Director of the Michigan State University Center for Bioethics and Social Justice, speaking on "The Ethical and Public Health implications of Mass Incarceration and Housing (In)Security,” Tues., Feb. 21 in Samuelson Chapel.
    • Lecture 1:  "Rethinking Prisons, Policing, and Public Health after Fifty Years of Mass Incarceration," 11:10am.  **Please note we will be on Convocation Schedule with classes ending at 11am and resuming at 12:40pm.

  • The Center for Global Engagement will host a program in cooperation with the Global Studies department on Tues., Feb. 21, 11am-1pm at the Flagpoles, to raise awareness for ongoing crises around our world, including the recent earthquakes in Syria, as well as the ongoing war in Ukraine. Please encourage your students to stop by and hear from students about current affairs, humanitarian outreach, and how each of them can contribute to these causes and be a responsible global citizen.
     
  • Commemorating Black History Month: The Center for Teaching and Learning Presents: Let’s Talk About Race Workshop with Dr. Lorri Santamaría, Director of Faculty Development and Inclusive Excellence, Tues., Feb. 21 from 11:25-12:15 in HUM 120. This offering is based on the book Let’s Talk About Race by Black author and scholar Dr. Nancy Dome and will include interactive conversation starters designed to support faculty in having compassionate dialogue on hard topics.   • SAVE THE DATE: Honors Convocation, Tues., Apr. 25, 11:15am, Samuelson Chapel.  We will be on Convocation Schedule with classes ending at 11:00am and resuming at 12:40pm. Outstanding students will be recognized for their academic achievement, faculty receiving promotion and/or tenure in Fall 2023 will be recognized, and the President's Award for Teaching Excellence recipient will be announced. Please note: In order to highlight the importance of our faculty at this prestigious academic event, regalia will be worn and faculty will meet at Gumby to process. Regalia ordered from the bookstore by Mar. 10, can be used for both Honors Convocation and Commencement.

  • President’s Award for Teaching Excellence (PATE): In keeping with the high esteem for teaching we have here at Cal Lutheran, the Awards Committee seeks nominations for the 2023 PATE. We invite you to nominate a colleague with at least five years of full-time teaching experience plus a sustained record of success in one or more of these areas:
    • Engaging students in high-impact learning activities (flipped classroom activities, urgent challenge case studies, group projects)
    • Co-authoring published manuscripts or peer-reviewed conference papers with students
    • Partnering with students on laboratory and other types of research
    • Creating and delivering innovative experiential activities (internships, field trips, service-learning projects)
    • Using technology to increase student participation in the classroom, time on task, engagement with classmates, access to remote experts, and more
    • Helping students make successful application to graduate school, fellowship programs, or employment in their field

The Awards Committee will vet all nominations through colleagues, chairs and deans, and three years of teaching evaluations. From this process, three finalists will be recommended to the President, who will choose the award recipient. The recipient of this award will be announced at the Honors Convocation in April. Please submit a letter detailing your nominee’s outstanding accomplishments in any of the above areas to Edlyn Pena (epena@callutheran.edu) by Feb. 24.

  • Canvas Training Resources: To learn Canvas at your own leisure and pace, the Digital Learning Unit of the Center for Teaching and Learning has created a Canvas Training Resources that provides step-by-step help videos and document guides on how to use Canvas. You will be able to learn the basics of building your course, announcements, assignments, gradebook, attendance, and other great Canvas tools.  Digital Learning will also be offering facilitator-led on-ground and online synchronous trainings on how to use Canvas starting March 2023. Training schedules will be released in late February for faculty to register for the training sessions. Please stay tuned.
     
  • Academic Difficulty Notices for Traditional Undergraduates: The official reporting period for the Spring 2023 Academic Difficulty Notices (ADNs) runs through Fri., Mar. 10. This is the University’s early warning system to identify students who may be struggling in their academics. Additional information can be found on www.callutheran.edu/adn.
     
  • The Center for Teaching and Learning presents: Virtual Faculty Mentoring Mondays with Dr. Lorri Santamaría, Director of Faculty Development and Inclusive Excellence and colleagues, Mondays from 11-11:45am. We will be adding a second option to connect from 3:00-3:45pm as well, beginning Mar. 13.   • Nominations being accepted now for scholarships supporting your participation in the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD) Faculty Success Program! If you need a breakthrough in your writing and research productivity or promise yourself every semester, you're going to be highly productive, but end up falling short year after year - then this summer professional development opportunity is for you. The 12-week (5/14-8/5) online offering helps faculty with the skills necessary to increase research and writing productivity while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.   • Save the Date: The Film and Television Department and the Sarah W. Heath Center for Equality and Justice present the Women in Film Summit, Mon., Mar. 6 and Tues., Mar. 7, 6-8pm, Richter Hall. A reception with light refreshments begins at 5:30pm. Admission is free.
     
  • The CTL Jr. Faculty Retreat Series. This series offers ART support whether you are preparing your file for 2, 4, 6 year, and/ or promotion. You will find information, exemplars, and guidance in this cumulative series. New faculty, you don’t want to miss this! Upcoming sessions will be held Tuesdays 11:25am to 12:15pm in HUM 120: Mar. 7, Apr. 11 and on May 2 members of the ART Committee will be present to share and field questions.   • Have you published a book or illustrated a work during the past year that was (or is anticipated to be) published between May 2022 -  April 2023? We would like to honor you at our GRAND (Grant Recipients and Authors of Notable Distinction) Reception. This event was formerly titled the Provost's Faculty Grant Recipient and Author Recognition Reception, which takes place annually during the Festival of Scholars. Please email the Office of Sponsored Research & Projects at osrp@callutheran.edu with a brief synopsis of your published book or illustrated work, along with the date of publication.
