Faculty Learning Communities

The Office of Academic Affairs is pleased to offer support for the creation of Faculty Learning Communities for the 2025-26 academic year. Faculty Learning Communities are composed of no more than 5 faculty members who agree to engage in professional development on a particular topic of interest over a semester or an entire academic year.

Eligibility

All full-time faculty at Cal Lutheran are eligible to apply; additionally, those individuals who have been promoted to senior adjunct status are eligible to participate.

Application Requirements

Faculty Learning Community (FLC) applicants must submit one application for each FLC proposed group. The application must identify one faculty who serves as the convener of the group and the names and contact information for up to four colleagues. There must be a minimum of 3 faculty involved in the FLC. The application must include the proposed professional development topic as well as materials that will be used for the FLC group's learning (e.g., books, journal articles, podcasts, videos).

Selected FLC groups running for one semester will receive up to $250 in funding to subsidize materials for their professional development for up to 8 FLCs for the 2025-26 academic year; proposed FLCs for an entire year are eligible to receive up to $500 in funding to subsidize materials for their professional development. The convener of the selected FLC is responsible for submitting all reimbursement forms and associated receipts to Kathleen Rodriguez at kathleenrodriguez@CalLutheran.edu within 2 weeks of purchases being made for reimbursement from the Cal Lutheran Business Office. It may take up to six weeks for a check to be cut for reimbursement. All reimbursement forms must be received no later than Friday, May 1, 2026 to be eligible; if forms are submitted after this date, the FLC members may not be reimbursed for their expenses given the close of the fiscal year on campus.

All FLC members will be expected to present a breakout session at a future fall or winter retreat on the topic that they explored during their FLC experience.

Application Timeline

Applications for year-long or fall semester FLCs is Wednesday, October 1, 2025; if funding remains, applications for spring semester FLCs is Friday, February 6, 2026. All awarded funding for FLCs must be spent by May 1, 2026.
