Compensation Update

Cal Lutheran Faculty and Staff,

I am very pleased to announce that the Board of Regents approved a salary increase, which will go into effect this Monday, August 22.

At the end of July, the Cabinet and I met with the Board of Regents to review the 2022-23 budget and to present financial scenarios for the next few fiscal years. As we expected, and as the future-year scenarios confirmed, the pandemic-related enrollment shortfalls will continue to affect our budgets for at least the next three years. Despite these difficult financial realities, the Cabinet and I made a request to the Board to set aside a pool of funds for 2022-23 compensation increases. The Board accepted our request and passed a resolution to confirm their support.

The approved compensation pool is smaller than we would like given the high and still rising inflationary rates and the cost of living in Southern California. Though I wish we had more funds to distribute, any compensation increase during a deficit budget year demonstrates a good faith effort to support you: our faculty and staff.

The aforementioned funds will be allocated this week to Vice Presidents who will distribute them to eligible employees (e.g., permanent employees hired before June 1) as they deem appropriate. Please be aware that it may not be the case that an “across-the-board” allocation method will be applied.

I will be discussing the budget situation and other important issues at a Fall Town Hall whose date is forthcoming. As we increase our student enrollment and retention and bring to fruition many of the action items in the Strategic Plan, it is my expectation that we will be able to address salary issues more broadly and deeply. I look forward to working with you to make all those things happen.

Thank you for all you do in service to Cal Lutheran and our students.

Lori E. Varlotta, Ph.D.

President

  • Spotlight on HSI Week / Enfoque en la Semana de las HSI
    September 12, 2024

With what I hope to be the hottest days of the academic year behind us — temperature wise — I am excited to share that this week California Lutheran University is celebrating National Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Week. Only 600 institutions in the United States have the honor of engaging in such festivities, and we are proud to be among them.

  • Grateful for You

To say I feel welcomed into this community would be the understatement of my working life. Since my first official day on the job, I have had the privilege of meeting many of you. You have welcomed me with open arms at local church services, a synod assembly, during impromptu conversations along "the spine," and at The Habit for lunch and Starbucks for coffee.
